Well, its that time again!
BB is beginning.....And this is my pre-thoughts on the human experiment.
Kyle and Jackie O are taking over, and man...I dunno. I love those guys, I listen to them every morning, but I dont know if they can pull this off. Im going to miss Gretel so much, and I honestly dont know how the show is going to survive without her quick wit. Ive been sick to death of her stumbling on her lines (but I suppose Id stumble too on some of those ridiculous word plays within word plays) but when it comes time to defend BB, no one does it better than Gretel. She's got the quick harsh words and no nonsense tone of voice that make people hear her. What are Kyle and Jackie O going to do if they have to defend it intelligently? Have they read the book? Do they understad the BIG BROTHER CONCEPT?
And this morning, when they couldnt remember when it actually started...Oh, Yeah, that fills me with confidence alright! Stumbling over their dates.....
Im also not sure about the selection process - year after year BB has served up magnificent housemates, and yet Australia, year after year, votes out the interesting ones (the revenge vote) and we get left with all the submissive personalities that dont push the herd mentality at all. You want to see packs form, fight and fragment - you want to see BB throw on the pressure and HURT these people, and see just how much pressure it takes for each animal to reach up and rip off its mask as it howls the primal scream.
And this year AUSTRALIA has selected the housemates from VIDEO.....Oh, dear. I just dont have that much faith in Australia to pick the right people. The one benefit of this is, perhaps the selected people have not really thought about the implications, are slightly more 'run of the mill' people than usual, and they'll crack that much faster.
Because for gods sake, if we are going to do this thing, lets do it right. 1984 is not about a happy place where people go on holiday and have 'an experience' for 3 months, 1984 is about stripping away all the basic human rights until there are none and what this does to the mind. Its cruel, its hard, but the contestants chose to put themselves through the experiment for a chance at the cash, so we dont have to feel sorry for them. If I hear anything else about the housemates 'experience' I might have to hurt my poor innocent tv. What about MY experience as the viewer?
And, I still think Kman had the best ever BB idea. To recapture the isolation and control in the book, when someone is evicted, they should simply disappear. No sitting around the couch holding hands - they should simply vanish, and heres the kicker - to truly follow the BB principle, the other housemates should not be allowed to talk about them. In 1984 when someone vanished they never existed. Imagine what that would do to the pack mentality!
And now....For the adults only show. There is a principle in BB that says in order to vote, we must see all of the housemates personality. So when they swear, when they talk about sexual experiences or other 'mature content' subjects, it becomes fodder for adults only. Yes, there are plenty of viewers watching adults only for glimpses of nudity, but so many more of us were sitting entranced though David's speeches - the Gay cowboy who was determined to bring attention to the plight of the choice in the outback. Many other conversations on culture and politics and war were had on the adults only show, revealing the climate of young people today on all kinds of topics. And yet we are denied the show because some grannys out there cant get their heads out of the gutter and see the adults only show for what it is. And lets not forget that senator who thinks its ok to spend tax payers money, and its ok for her young daughter to watch 'The Oc' in the 8:30 timeslot, but its not ok to stay parked on the couch when adults only is on. Her exact words were "how will I explain this to my daughter" and this cry was quickly taken up by all other wingnuts.
I gotta tell ya, it SHOULD be harder to explain why Marissa's 14 year old sister is slutting it up to her much older boyfriend.
From what Ive heard, Kyle and Jackie O simply arent touching it - it hasnt been mentioned. Im severly disappionted, as they were so keen to fight for the adults only show in times past. Surely we could get by with adults only segments in the up late show? No one could complain about that, BUT
THEY ARE GOING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT BIG BROTHER ANYWAY!!!! Soon it will begin - all the really fucking stupid people who do not see the value of the human experiement will soon start to scream in a fever pitch and if the great sea of complaint is going to be there, why fight it? Capitolize on it like they did in the first few years, use the hype as advertising.
Because there are some people who dont like to be reminded that they themselves are animals - they see the behaviour of people in the house and wish to distance themselves and the whole human race from what they see. When the value of it is totally lost on them - a chance to watch pack behaviour develop, fragment and re connects, who is alpha female and male? How do they interact? Who is submissive and WHY are they? When an eviction occurs, watch how the power is lapped up and who becomes the new alpha? And most importantly, how much pressure does it take for each individual to crack? This is immensely important - it helps you rate every person you meet.
So Oh, here it comes, the new BB......I hope its going to be great, but really, I Dont Think So.....

It seems we have different points on this one, and you had to go and swear on my page - You should know, we dont use those dirty words around here, especially now he's out of power.
I was trying to show the worth of the experiment and I guess Ive failed, in your case anyway. Stay away from channel 10 and its associated radio shows for a few months mate....
And I feel great after eating junk food.

Yup, its tv alright....Big Brother. Have you read 1984 by George Orwell? If you havnt I wont believe it. But its oh so fun to watch them lock humans away and drive them nuts, I never get tired of it!
