Kalikapsychosis - " All I see is 6 billion lunatics looking for the fastest ride out. Who's not crazy? Look around. Everyone's drinking, smoking, shooting up, shooting each other, or just plain screwing their brains out....Cos they don't want 'em anymore. I'm Crazy? Honey, I'm the original one eyed chicklet in the Kingdom of the blind, cos at least I admit the world makes me nuts." - Glory

Big Brother (Adults Only?)

March 12th 2007 03:00
Hello, all.
First up, I adore Big Brother, for so many reasons. I didnt always. It was a slow thing, until one day I found myself utterly hooked, unable to look away, now Im one of those people who is utterly crushed when it ends, moaning, "oh, what will I watch now?" I usually dont have the money to watch live streaming, or vote, but I get into all the free to air stuff.
Let me explain the attraction - I did George Orwells "1984" in school, and I also did a unit called 'utopias and anti utopias' and the closer they get to the orwell idea, the more I love it.
But, mainly, Im an animal trainer. I watch Big Brother to see people behave like animals - its important for my research. The first night they go in theyre so excited - watch all the happy, brittle masks disappear, peel back to the real humanity beneath! See how different people react to different things - Im amazed by some people who refuse to let Big Brother push their buttons. Im very interested in "the mask" people wear for society, and watching Big Brother lets me see it degrade, disappear, and rebuild. Its just FASCINATING to me the way people react, behave, interact and change so violently depending on tiny environmental issues.
But a couple of things really piss me off. One - No smoking. The foriegn guest said it best last year "What is wrong with you people?" Oh, seeing smokers and non smokers go attit in the house would be BRILLIANT, not to mention the smokers arguing to buy smokes in their shopping! Imagine the conflict it would create, the alliances formed, and if there was only one smoker left in the house barricking for smoke money in the budget. Oh, it gives me goosebumps to imagine the drama! The research into human character!
It pisses me off because they use the excuse "smoking is not allowed on Australian TV" well, excuse me, I see smoking all the time! The more mystery you create, the more young smokers you will have. The more 'dangerous' you make it sound, the more young people will want to rebel that way. But thats another post.
On to number two. Toilet paper. Im sorry BB, I know that gets a lot of drama, but its a HEALTH issue, and they should never run out of it. There should be a cheapo, home brand version available in the staples closet and if they want a luxury brand that should be an argument for the shopping budget.
Now, finally, for Adults Only. The arguments that went on last year were childish and ridiculous. Between adults for heavens sake! The one I love the most, Oh, the best one is "How do I explain this to my kids?" Now, in the adults only timeslot, we have Law and order svu, Criminal intent, Medium, Supernatural and the OC. All of these shows have extremely graphic adult content, from vicious murders, sexual crimes, teenage sex, supernatural themes and drug use. They display it often in the most dramatic way possible. The Big Brother Adults only show I always found to be hilarious, far from just watching naked people, it was often an opportunity to see them simply chat about subjects that were unsuitable for the daily show, such as Davids moving talk on suicide of young gay people who cannot admit their lifestyle to their communities. How can these graphic shows be allowed to continue in that same time slot when and innocent and realistic show, encasing our current social society has been banned?
I was very disappionted when Channel Ten axed the show. Usually they would debate it hotly, standing up for the rights of freedom of speech in the media, last year they folded miserably and I was extremely disappionted. The thing that makes me so angry is that people seem to have a personal vendetta against the show, and use their power to try and make it disappear, when instead they should be watching and learning about society today. Their inability to realize that - YES< THIS IS SOCIETY TODAY is the massive crux of this problem. These are the up and coming people, the people who will be running the country one day, and they are showing us what our society is like at its best and worst.
Gretel says that the Adults Only show is nessesary for the voting process - its nessesary for far more than that. Its nessesary for showing us the behaviour of humans in the now - how society evolves year after year. Its a learning curve, every year we see something different, and we always manage to get a laugh along the way.
Come on Channel Ten - Dont be bullied! Dont let down MILLIONS of viewers this year, let society speak for you as it so often does, in a resounding screaming YES to show us the semi adult content.
Or, if you decide to keep it axed, then you'd better get rid of Law&Order, The Oc(which has been disgusting in its teenage sex scenarios) and Medium and Supernatural - Cos, how am I going to explain it to my kids!?
Worry not about little Johnny Howard - He'll be dead in ten years and BB will still be going strong, hopefully with toilet paper, chain smokers, people shaving their snatches, and people rocking how we think and feel - Cos thats just what the new generation is for. To push us to the next level.
Im longing to see that innocent hilarity again - a far cry from the violent and terrible crime usually in the timeslot, or the sexually active 14 year old girls smoking bongs.....

not being much of a fan of Big Brother I can`t really relate....I especially don`t get how you can watch other people sleep! lol that amazed me with my mom who is a huge BB fan.
you raise some valid points...although I guess it is reality TV so obviously it would influence all the little kiddies more.....

Hi Kleonaptra,

I went to uni with Tim Brunero - runner up what 2 years ago - 2004?

I have to say it was very interesting watching him on BB. I suppose I was more curious to see how he would be "portrayed". You know how most of the housemates claim they've been portrayed wrong - well I don't know them to know if their claims were true.

But Tim I have to say was on BB as I knew him at uni.

So yes, it is a interesting social science experiment.

Love & stuff
Mrs M

You've made some very valid points there, Kleonapatra.

When is BB going to be on this year?

Chewy,
Thanks for the comment.
Ash,
I dont watch people sleep! Thats ridiculous...I stay tuned reading a book waiting for them to show the 'good' stuff!
Thankyou mrs M!
Love to hear from people who appreciate the experiment!! And I remember Tim, that was one of my most favourite series - Him and Katie were amazing! I remember him screaming through the house in drag - and BB saying "Tim, a gentleman does not run in heels" OH Oh, LMAO
Charles,
It always starts in may. Around my birthday, the 2nd, usually!
Paul,
Too much SMS time.
Wendi,
If you are interested in the 'masks' people wear, definitely give it a go.
Everyone - if you havnt read '1984' you wont get it!

Hi Kleonaptra,

My favourite part was when he found out that Katie loved Margaret Thatcher.

Tim loves Gough Whitlam. He was really into his politics at uni.

Was he going to let political ideologies get in the way of true love? Oh the drama.

Love & stuff

Mrs M,
Yes, the drama! At least Kate was true to herself and didnt give him a 'pity relationship'!
Ash,
I dont watch MUCH TV, I try and catch neighbors everyday, just cos its SO silly! I love 'Medium' 'house' 'supernatural' and 'south park' but Im not too bothered if I have to miss them. Anything I really want I get on DVD. 'Us' tme for my man and me is sitting in front of something, chillin on the couch....and talking all the way through it about the concepts theyve raised! Once watching a movie with us mum said "will you to shut up! How do you watch ANYTHING like this!"
But for BB, I demand total silence, and I cant miss ANY episodes!

i like your outlook Kleo . . .i remember the turkey slapping incident, and it wasnt outrageous that it was on television, it was outrageous that young men commonly find that sort of behaviour acceptable and young women commonly excuse it . . . Big Brother just shines a Big Mirror back on our society

Hey Morgan

Oh that got blown right outta proportion. Those guys were innocent and Camilla was not bothered. If it was me I would have grabbed it and said "You aint getting it back now. This is what happens when you cant keep it in your pants"
