Kalikapsychosis - " All I see is 6 billion lunatics looking for the fastest ride out. Who's not crazy? Look around. Everyone's drinking, smoking, shooting up, shooting each other, or just plain screwing their brains out....Cos they don't want 'em anymore. I'm Crazy? Honey, I'm the original one eyed chicklet in the Kingdom of the blind, cos at least I admit the world makes me nuts." - Glory

Big Brother - Opening Night!!

April 23rd 2007 04:00
The excitement took me by surprise. I made a great effort to be free and ready to watch dead set on 7pm. I sat before the TV, counting down the precious seconds, but I was utterly taken by surprise at the excitement that flooded through me as the 'BB' music began to play....
Its starting, its REALLY starting!
They are going to lock people up, screw with their heads, change their perceptions....Its the greatest human experiment in the world...AND THEY"RE GOING TO LET ME WATCH!!!
From the get go, its obvious this year, BB's got something to prove. The completely recycled house is a bit overdone, and Im sure the water tanks are going to become a major drama about halfway through the series. I found one interesting point - An artwork on one of the walls, (available to buy) is by John Darlson, whom I havnt heard of, but Im sure he must be an environmental activist with some public standing - Big Brother is taking a moral high ground this year.
I should also mention, on Friday, the lovely Gretel had an interview on 2UE, a station where all the wussy baby whiners gather to have their say on why BB is bad. I didnt hear it, but I heard from a reliable source that Gretel actually got her interviewer to admit that the reason people are so threatened by BB is exactly because it IS a current slice of society - People dont want to admit, this is REAL!!
But, Im rejoycing! Why? Because this year, the true BB principal is being upheld. The control of the environment, thus leading to control of the individual, control of their past, present and future, ultimate power, is being cruelly used, and Gretel herself is making direct references to people as animals - reminding everyone exactly what BB is all about.
First -
The Secrets. No ALLOCATED prize money ( I found this word play interesting - no allocated prize money, but there may be money? Hmm) The public pick the final two housemates (who have yet to enter and will cause havoc when they do, I'll explain why in a moment) The mysterious White Room, and the mysterious Mr X. And one more - there is more than one relationship in the house! I think Ive already picked one, but we'll see.(Travis and Aleisha, possible brother and sister)
OK! Into the nitty gritty of the human experiment!
Cruel fact one - The rewards room is partially transperant. All those denied access to the rewards rom shall be able to see in full living colour exactly what they are missing out on! Oh, I was LOL, ROFLMAO thinking about the implications of this!
Cruel fact two - Some of the housemates are setups, moles. I picked some straight away - I doubt it will come out throughout the series but it is obvious at least a few are paid to be there. The goal I think is to stabilize the house - These people have parameters to meet.
Cruel fact three - the girls entered first. This is unbelievably smart, for the human experiment. Let me explain, because this is the most entertaining and brilliant thing I have seen in a long time!
Not only were the girls allowed to enter first, (one by one, no doubt in a controlled sequence based on personality) they were allowed to WATCH the boys enter! Instantly, the girls began to form a 'clique', establishing parameters of the group, foundations, and....Barriers. Not only that, but BB then sends them to the diary room together, emphasizing the group focus and banding them together even stronger. Then they find out they are watching the boys. As the boys enter one by one and begin to form their own select group(complete with protective barriers) the girls begin to establish a pecking order - who is most powerful, the leaders, who is submissive, and who follows the crowd. The boys do a similar thing - so the two groups form a pecking order independant in themselves.
At this point Gretel makes some interesting comments. "Its like watching 'Discovery'!" Emphasizing the point of BB - the animal/human experiment. She mentions the girls giving the boys "Evil Eyes" and "spying girls" now emphasizing the girls have a position of power over the boys, great psychological trick!
Also at this point, the human 'mask' is incredibly evident. They like some boys but not others, trying to hide their deepest feelings from the group, but yet striving to belong to the group mind, they wear their masks skillfully. The boys too wear their masks, which are so different to the girls but no less important.
When the girls are introduced to the boys there is a flurry of activity - All the girls have a favourite boy they just have to meet - the girls make it obvious they have been observing them, emphasizing their position of power, and the boys are not happy - Observation that the girls are already drinking(possesion=power) they know they have been automatically placed on a lower rung.
I think this is set to change however, as quickly, a NEW pecking order began to right itself - girls who are submissive in the female group seek mates within the male group knowing this will elevate them. 'Leaders' of both groups automatically migrate towards one another - the group stabilizes in this way. Positioning of the beds - all head to head - also emphasizes the seperate group minds, it looks like a school camp bedroom.
This is why two new housemates will cause havoc - a pecking order that has been twice established and shuffled will suddenly be rocked by new people - all housemates will go back to square one - individuality - as they accept or reject the new people.
Then - The announcement that there will be no prize money. Of course, they waited until they were locked in the house to tell them - why didnt I think of that - Gretel even acknowledged that some may try to walk, but here is the evil, evil, brilliant thing -
The girls established a pecking order and a group mind. The boys did the same. Then, the groups came together, and a new pecking order was established. Pecking order is not just based on who is stronger, its very much based on the masks we wear and what you want the rest of the group to THINK you are like - not what you ACTUALLY ARE like! Its about saving face, saving mask?
When he told them, they sat in silence. The masks were ripped away. They were all stunned, and shocked, and white faced. Except TJ, who seemed amused. She doesnt have much need of a mask, I think. Before making the big statement BB emphasized all the control aspects - no TV, no communication, no music, NO POWER. And, just to twist the knife - no one can contact YOU! But the point - Each and every one was trying desperately to control their reaction and failing. Because they had a place in their respective pecking order (wherever that may be) they could not 'dissappiont' the other members of the pack by reacting the 'wrong' way. The leaders must lead - the submissives must follow, and the 'pack' mentality was evident. Straight away, an awkward, loud babble ensued - everyone talking at once and very loudly(signs of being confused - upset) desperately trying to convince each other that they didnt care about prize money, all the while desperately trying to convince themselves that there would be.
Aaah, beauty it was, to see these 'normal' and 'respectable' humans trying to hold their masks on while it trembled and cracked - the introduction of two seperate groups has been useful(for control of the group as a whole) entertaining(by seeing pack order shuffling, reactions to boys etc) and stabilizing - This is how the human animal likes to work, in male/female based pecking orders.
To wrap up all the sticky ends -
The relationships in the house - Not only interesting and entertaining, it will once again change the pecking orders. I think the partial focus for this year, by introducing two new housemates tonight and then revealing the relationships, is to continually change the pecking order and remove security. A nice trick - Bind them together and tear them apart again and again and again. I cant wait to see the effects.
The green house and new features - 4 minute showers are going to change the pressure, as will composting and recycling, but the new features of Chill Out Room and a phone, (the uses of which have not been explained) should be revealing of human natures and breaking points.
BB has itself worked out practically this year. Usually Gretel stumbles over a few lines, camera sequences sometimes dont line up and they often go overtime. No such problems last night. Camera sequences were flawless and matched up seamlessly, the show was perfectly timed and Gretel had never been so clear.
There are lots of common aspects in the house this year. Lots of small towns, blondes, and big families. Most important is lots of people who left home at a young age - Strong willed, independant confident people that know themselves well and define themselves and the mask they wear. Its great for stabilizing the house, but even better for the human experiment! All these people have strong views which should get interesting as these views become less important in the everyday boredom of living!
I hope Ive made my views and points clear - I made 15 pages of notes last night on the housemates primary reactions and interactions with each other. I cant wait to see what they do with it, and good on you Gretel for continuously emphasizing the important points for those of us smart enough to see it!
See you in the house!
