Do you get me?
August 25th 2008 03:02
We are all alone in this world. We may have friends and partners and family, and some understand us better than others. But really, we all percieve differently, seeing and feeling and even the simple image of a tree or cloud studded sky appears different to me than it is to you.
For this reason we are alone, and most of dont even realize it. We believe, because our phone rings, because we can talk to people and hug them, that we are not alone. This illusion allows us to delude ourselves, and thus the great hole within only grows deeper, growling in its intensity, as we push harder and harder to prove that we are not alone.
It is only when we reach that point where it is realized how differently we think that we truly see the gap between ourselves and others. Grief will do it, but it can also be as simple as watching a movie with a friend and one of you didnt get the joke that the other thought was SO obvious.
Select few of us realize it and understand it - that even though we are, truly alone, we do not need to be lonely. The interaction we experience is mostly hollow, but is useful for a learning experience. We can use others to fill the gap but it wont last - the only solution is to become your own best friend.
In this place of separation of loneliness, that question - "Do you get me?" it becomes the most important of all. So often I hear it, always answered by "yeah, I get you" even though its so seldom true.
And every now and then, dont you feel that magic moment when you really, truly, are on the same wavelength? Then the question never needs to be asked, a look in the eye, is all thats needed, and its a special feeling, knowing that another being is feeling the exact same way as you.
Its taken awhile of writing this blog, but Ive finally come to the conclusion that I already knew to be true - Its impossible for you to get me. The only possible thing that can happen is that you take from the page your own meaning, your own feeling. Really, its not a sad thing, this aloneness, because it means anyone that reads my words can interpret them in a thousand different ways and that my simple thoughts are out there in hundreds of different interpretations. Thats the great thing about a blog isnt it? A sense of power, not so much that your being read, but that even if only a few people read it, such mundane words are out there being turned into thoughts and ideas.
And then we wonder why we fight over the bible.
