Going Native
December 31st 2008 02:28
Mum picked up the baby currawong yesterday morning. You knew it wouldnt be long didnt you? She didnt fare well in the storm, ended up soaking wet and being chased by the cat. So she was caught and dried and fed and set up on the back deck in the ever faithful rescue cage.
Its been so long since I rescued a native. She's so weird and strange - takes offence to everything. A feral would have settled in by now, she refuses. We intend to release her in a few days when she's strong. Her true parents were attacking her so its probably good we got her when we did. She's quite partial to the hunting here at night - her cage is under a light. Great for bug hunting. And the dear Mr Wist came up and sat with her for hours, just watching her and talking to her. Above all my animals, I love those that give of themselves. Wist is one who always reassures the newcomers.
So, Im triumphant - not only did I get to SEE a currawong baby Ive gotten to rescue her! By the way, the enfants terrible are cullid billed cuckoos or 'storm birds' and they are the largest of the cuckoo family. And yep, they are still here...
I think I might just give up identifying birds. I just cant get it right.
Love to you all and have fun tonight!
