I Hate Myself for this one......
June 18th 2007 02:51
I feel sick to my stomach. Im shaking, my fingers wont stop trembling. Bile is rising in my throat and saliva keeps puddling around my teeth.
Not a physical affliction this - No its one of the mind. Let me give you a run down.
Oh, and let me just mention, in passing, the number one rule of the West.....
Dont piss off your neighbors. Especially if all they seem to do is drink beer and shoot things. ESPECIALLY if they have dangerous dogs. And even more ESPECIALLY if you have very expensive horses running free.
We had been here less than two days. Kman and Mum were doing ANOTHER run from the old house. I would have gone to give mum a break but I couldnt drive the truck. I made a coffee, hunted down my cigarettes and wandered out onto the lovely back deck to soak up some of the peace. As I placed my coffee cup down on the edge of the wooden decking and lit up, I looked out over the wooded land.....
And my heart shrieked to a halt in my chest. Two massive, tall, fighting pitbulls were gambolling happily on my land. Just jaunting around like they owned the place. Drawing smoke hard into my chest to get my heart going again I strode down the yard, thinking "Oh, God, my ducks, please no!" By the time I was halfway down I could see the ducks were ok, (At that time, it was Poshe, Gwen, and a two winged Talli) but the pitbulls were now focusing on the horses. Mags and Zayf were in the house yard, safe with me. Teshan was tense and standing behind the geldings, she HATES dogs, Ive seen her kill a dog before. Its obvious shes had what we like to call "a Bad Experience". She was half afraid, half battle stance, all muscles tense and bulging, eyes wide and rolling, head pulled in to chest and ears back.
Spirit and Shakir have never seen a dog up close in their lives. Well, Mums Chiuahas, but its really not the same thing now is it? For geldings, theyre very agressive these two. Spirit took on a pony stallion at the last place, something I never expected a gelding to do. And Shakir, well, Shakir's got the Shakla Kahn fury all his foals are known for, and its mixed in with a heady dose of Teshans insanity - For all his fathers assertive, dominant genes, hes very much his mothers son.
I think it was right here and now that Shakir took the job of herd boss from Teshan.
Spirit remained between Teshan and Shakir, more curious than anything. Spirit is also Teshans boyfriend and was doing his bit by keeping her at the back. Shakir? Shakir gave a cursory glance to ensure his herd was behind him (where they should be) and strode forward wearing his battle gear - On FIRE he was, ears pricked, neck arched, high stepping, tail high, he stepped proudly towards them.
I stopped to watch. Its not like I have a gun(But Im a crack shot and if I had a rifle Im telling you now I would have shot them both and not shed a single tear over it, I could have had the 3 S' - Shoot, Shovel and Shut the hell up - over and done before drunken next door neighbor got home) I was armed, polypipe I think, and I was ready to intervene, but they hadnt noticed me and I was thinking, maybe, MAYBE Shakir might just kick them to death.
So I watched. Shakir put his nose forward in an "Im Shakir, this is my herd, who the hell are you?" sort of stance. One dog put a nose up obligingly while the other (fucking curse all trained hunting dogs that are not properly restrained by their DRUNKEN owners to the deepest darkest hell!) Flanked him! Oh, the cunning! Of course he hadnt noticed it flanking him - his attention was on the decoy!
I began to move. Shakir saw the flanking dog and flattened his ears - "Hey! Thats not fair! Yous arent nice!" and tried to bite decoy dog. Flanking dog came in to help and Shakir started to dance, head down, neck snaking, hooves dealing it out. Spirit shot his head up and Teshan started that "Fwah" snort that means theyre really upset. Seeing that Shakir meant business the dogs started to really play dirty, folding down into the ferns and creeping on their bellies to confuse them. The herd began to mill uncertainly.
It is at this point that a horses fighting instincts fail, and the predators know it. A horse is strong and courageous, he will fight to the death, and he can take out any dog living with one perfectly aimed kick. By moving in and out of the underbrush, confusing the horses senses then HIYAH! Leaping out at an unexpected moment, the horses flight reflex is activated and so they run. This is their undoing, as once they run its all too easy for the predator to run them down, exhausted by their own fear, and rip their throats out.
Thats why they tell you, dont get scared, get angry. Like Rocky Balboa, ok?
So I stride on down, roaring, spinning my polypipe. They sheepishly head home. "Oh, geez we didnt mean nothin"
And that, to me, is the worst kind of dog. The bored dog. The playing bored dog. They become the worst of killers.
While I was feeding they came scampering and wagging to me. I threw buckets at them and screamed, chased them home. I know it was all an eloborate trick - Im the head human, the herd boss. My scent is already the strongest out on the land. Suck in the boss, and we'll get free rein on the land amoungst the prey. Brilliant plan guys, sorry it didnt work out!
In an hour or so the drunken man himself arrived home. I say drunken because honestly Ive never seen this guy without a VB in his hand. Whatever he's doing, hes got that bottle. I was very nervously watching the dogs who had come back to menace the horses again. He called out "Misty!" and they both took off towards him in utter joy, "Masters home! Masters here!"
I did not see Misty or her mate for some time after this day. I saw their pure bred pitbull whos older and not up to much, but I chased his smiling face off as well.
Next week, we lost Poshe to heart attack.
Next week, we found Talli with her broken wing.
Next week, Gwen was dead, and the evidence spoke for itself.
Those puppies have been an utter bastard - I didnt even know they were breeding the things until I saw those puppies sniffing around. It seems, the kennel does not keep in the pups. But hes selling them, they'll be gone soon. I breathed a sigh of relief. It seems the pair is locked up (a BREEDING pair, fantastic, now theyre that much more dangerous) the puppies will be going soon and the only loose dog is ancient.
I sat down this morning, happy in my solitude, trying to keep Xiara from eating Najara, when suddenly my Mushy girl went ridgid. She stood up tall, strode to the window sill, and GROWLED. I got up.....
Misty and her mate were trotting past my fucking window! Jaunting around on my land yet again like they OWNED it! Eyes lit up, smiles wide, up to no good and looking for trouble. I secured Najara and bolted out the back, heart hammering. Shakir's strained his leg, Ive got him resting in the flat paddock, the same paddock where the buggers get in!
No sign of them. I checked the ducks who are on the back deck, never to go outside! I locked the door just in case they got bold. I head counted and swept back inside....
And called the council. I had to go for a little recce next door to check their adress but Ive dobbed them in. I hate it I HATE IT!!! I hate that I had to do it, that he made me do it. I hate that the second they get the letter and the warning they are going to KNOW who did it and they are going to think all sorts of horrible things about me. I was extremely underhanded - I should have warned him first but everytime I was going to mention it Id see him drinking and lolling about and think "well, yeah, he just looks so concerned!" And there is also the fact that a tree fell from our land ONTO HIS KENNELS and never once did he think to move the dogs. All five of them were in there.
I hate that he will probably come and confront me for all the wrong reasons, accuse me of all the wrong things. I hate that now I'll really have to watch myself, my animals, more than before. I will have to really trust my horses as much as I trust Teshan - Do NOT GO TO STRANGERS!!! Magnus and Zayfir would.....
Im so scared and sick over this. I dont begruge him his dogs I really dont. I wouldnt want a letter from the council telling me I was doing something wrong. I didnt want it to be this way. But what was I supposed to do? Honestly, tell me, what else could I have done? Im well aware that most likely all Ive done is make things worse but we couldnt go on like this!
And I was angry. So very, very angry. People are ignorant, people are stupid, people have no goddamn idea what their animals are capable of until Im walking over there with a vet bill in my hand and saying we can do this the easy way, and you pay for the damage your dogs have done, or I take you to court, and you can pay pain and suffering damages too.
Every day we see these attacks on the news - that little girl who was killed, just recently a woman torn apart by her own 11 animals. I hear it so many times Im sick of it now - " But my dogs wouldnt do that" "and why not, Mr Dog Owner?" "Well, because theyre mine"
Utterly brilliant deduction dont you think?

I hope all your animals are Okay.....
Kudos to you for having the courage to ring the council - it doesn't sound like you had very many choices and I believe you have made the right one....
Many people just sit back and hope for the best or do nothing.....good for you I say!

"I'm sooo sorry for all that you have been through because of those dogs!" I kind of know how you feel. We have a mean dog on our street that has caused me to not be able to walk down my own street anymore. They think their dog is sooo sweet and laughed when we told them about her attacking Kaitlyn. She ran out furocously showing her teeth, growling and started ripping at kaitlyns pants. Putting two teeth marks in her leg. I already have a fear from dogs from an attack when i was 7 so i was no help and just freaked. They did put an invisible fence and color on her. I think we're clear to walk again, but i'm always going to be scared now. <shrugs>

They can hang on like not other dog can. They are just too risky.
Stay concerned and be very direct with your neighbour, tell him straight, they have to go. They've already killed and they'll do it again and it could even be you.

I don't like pit bulls and bulldogs but did some research about them after all these attacks came to light. By nature they are supposed to be sweet, affectionate...but no I'm not going to test that!...UNLESS brought up by the 'wrong type' of person.
I'm just generalising but it sems that a certain type of personality chooses to rear a pit bull...funnily enough a lot of 'celebrities' have pit bulls as pets...what does this say???
Don't waste your energy hating yourself hon...You absolutely did the right thing Kleo.
The brave thing, the best thing, the humane thing.
After all...if nothing is done, the neighbours might need your help one day when Misty gets hungry...
big hugs...hope the council takes action..

Step five: buy more ammo
but will add the following for consideration
Step six: inform council that a bounty should be placed on the owners of marauding animals found on your property again
Step seven: follow steps one thru five if other animals appear
Step eight: invite owner(s) over
Step nine: shoot neighbor in butt cheeks with shotgun loaded with rock salt pellets
Step ten: plead insanity when charged with assault; tell them you were just obeying the voices.

Kerryn,
Thankyou for every single compliment. Great to meet you and I was warmed by your words.
Tammy,
*hug* babe, Its terrible when theres dangerous dogs around isnt it? Im sorry for you and kaitlyn. Thanks so much for coming over and pandering to my insanity!
Kylie,
You said it babe. I even told the council woman, if it was border collies or something it wouldnt be so big a deal, but these are HUNTING dogs.
Karyzzz,
Thanks so much for your support, but considering I was willing to take on a brown snake for my ducks(I reakoned I could survive the 20mins it took the ambulance!) Then just let them try and take me apart, Oh, let em try! I just see red when my babies are threatened!
Dervish Dusk,
Always a lovely comment darl. Your opinions are so like mine - the certain people that want certain dogs. Its unbelievable(cant get much more creative than that - wine glass in hand!)
Raven,
Hope you dont mind me shortening the name - great to see you here, and man, am I ROFLOL because ever since I saw 'Kill Bill 2' Ive wanted to try that rock salt thing......

If the neighbor won't listen and the dogs can't,
and you petitioned the council and they remain deaf,
post your land with a a notice, such as this:
Stray animals, dogs or fools wandering on this property may be shot if caught menacing any of it's inhabitants or stock.
First I'd try trapping the animals, and shipping them to a country that's loves a tasty dog stew or sell them back to their owner after you've had them neutered and their teeth pulled.
Failing that:
Get a shotgun, a nice 10 gauge and some double OO buckshot rounds or rock salt loaded rounds and dust their behinds.
For bears in Alaska we load our shotguns this way: the first round or two is to blind the animal by destroying it's ability to smell, the other rounds are slugs meant to kill it.
For your purposes, I'd load with two rock salt rounds to discourage the recipient and the balance with double OO rounds to send them to the pits.
Obviously I am not familiar with your laws, but I would think that when protecting your property, livestock, or life and limb you are allowed some legal leeway.
Your situation is serious and can easily spiral out of control. Post your land, contact an attorney and then act in such a manner that you get the drunken neighbors undivided attention. What ever you choose to do, please don't bluster and fume: act deliberately.
Best of fortune with this unpleasantness. Raven

Unfortunately here in Australia we are not supposed to have guns AT ALL....A small rifle is permitted under liscense but our property isnt large enough to qualify. Also the companion animal act was recently changed - all you can do is report to the council. However, I assumed they were established neighbors. In an unrelated incident we met the neighbors on our OTHER side, a magnificent, huge maltese family. They told us drunken pitbulls only moved in a week before us, and we've made good friends with them. So now, any drama, and Im calling in Big Ben and the maltese army!
Oh, and the maltese army mysteriously lost 3 pet sheep around the time pitbulls moved in....
Thanks for your words mate, youre a gem!
JoshZ,
Thanks for the visit mate, living in fear is indeed no way to live
Candice,
Thanks so much! I write better in this format(as opposed to poetry) and Im glad a few people complimented me on that. Im trying hard not to feel guilty....
Mrs M,
Sorry it was so heavy! Hes REALLY gonna be in trouble if they aint registered....
Ash,
I hear you. Im really scared because Shakir is still very sore in his back legs from the mud and an injury from his youth and Im working today - they'll be alone. I want a rodesian ridgeback I can leave here on gaurd!
Ancient Warrior,
Thanks muchly for the comment....I feel guilty because I really dont begrudge him his dogs, I once had the RSPCA called for one of my horses even though we'd done nothing wrong. It really hurt. I know hes going to make trouble as soon as he finds out and thats even scarier than the dogs - you know that sign, forget the dog, watch out for the owner?
Now, if I wanted to be a REAL bitch, I could call the RSPCA on them for their horse - most of my regular readers know that story from 'judgement' and even though shes got a rug now they still dont feed her and she has no grass. Shes a thoroughbred and shes just skin and bones.
Hard to find good neighbors.....
Thankyou everyone, Im moved by how many people have come and commented on my plight....

I'm not one to barge in with unsolicited advice, but you did ask..
I empathise with your plight, having similar neighbors; but you must give them a chance to communicate before drawing your own conclusions. Reading your piece, I saw no evidence that you tried to talk to him about this..if I'm wrong, all apologies.
It's hard to do, I know, but there is a way to do it without him getting defensive or hostile:
You must approach him because you are concerned about his dogs. "My horses are so skittish around dogs; I'm so afraid yours might get hurt and I'd feel so bad! "
That shifts the focus onto his dogs' wellbeing (which concerns him much more than your troubles--that's human nature). It's much easier to communicate this way than to try and make him see your side.
-And Dusk is right--pit bulls are sweet-natured until trained otherwise.
Just my two cents' worth from dealing with this myself..

Bad news this... but you have done the right thing... do not stress about it. HIs job is to keep his animals on his property and your job is to keep your animals on yours. SImple as that.
As far as his retaliation and council goes, I'd be talking monetary value of the horses and asking him...'Has he got his insurnace." Has Council? That'll shut them up.
Meanwhile, personally? ...I think you are so brave and it's awful not to be able to live in the peace you deserve in this world...just a nudge here okay... but what conflict within you is working it's way out now... IN asserting yourself to your rights, you are growing here... no way should you back down!
I dobbed a neighbour in long before I spoke to him, because the fact is, if a neighbour doesn't realise he's causing this kind of exaggerated, aggravated, irresponsible stress, then talking to him/her is usually a waste of time anyway... and you deplete your energy by trying.
You still have time to warn him that his dogs are escaping iunto your yard..?
What does Kman say about it?
I am deeply saddened to imagine you living under this stress... I know it well and it is horrible. I wish you a speedy resolution...remember oppose the action, not the person.
Just my 2 cents... not biased at all...*chuckle*
*hugs*

All Things Sustainable
I actually got bitten by a dog about three weeks ago. The dog tried to maul my calf muscle but the owner called him off. He ripped my pants, broke the skin and left a bruise that covered pretty much all of the back of my calf muscle. When I asked why the dog wasn't on a leash, all the dude could say was he's never done that before. I said that ain't the behaviour of a dog that is not vicious... Some dog owner's are mighty stupid.
I have two smallish sized friendly dogs who I could never imagine biting anyone, but the only place I let them off the lead is at the dog park. It just comes down to respecting that other people do not feel the same as you do about your dogs. Sound obvious? Well, some people just don't get it...
Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it.

I appreciate your honesty and I dont mind you barging in one bit - I encourage free exchange of ideas no matter what.
I made a few attempts to speak to him and his girlfriend and as soon as I say "Hi" they just wave and turn around and walk the other way. Very much "dont bother me" body language. He obviously does not give a damn about the dogs because(cant remember if I mentioned this?) a tree fell from our property onto his kennels, and while Kman was carving it up he spoke to the guy(why he didnt mention our troubles, or tell me he spoke to him, I'll never know!) asking if the dogs were ok....Seeing as how the tree squashed the kennel almost flat. They guy shrugged, swigged his beer and sauntered off. So you can see how I was less than enthusiastic trying to get hold of him...Kman went around the other night and either no one was there or they just didnt answer.
I recently found out from the neighbors on the other side that they(pitbulls) only moved in a week before us and 3 of their(other neighbors) pet sheep went missing at the same time. The people across the road have young kids and the dogs are causing trouble there too.
The letter would have arrived last night - havnt seen the dogs today.
Thankyou so much for the honest comment, always nice to get all points of view.
Mis,
Thanks for your visit....Once I deal with this, whats next I wonder?
Lovely Lilla,
Thanks for stoppin by and warming my heart.....Kman tries not to think of difficult stuff....*rolls eyes* men are such babies! He did try to speak to them the other night but no one answered. Ive tried numerous times to speak to them over the fence but they just shrug me off. You said it - If they dont realize somethings up, its near useless to try and explain it to drunken idiots. Letter would have come last night, no dogs today.
Georgina,
Great to see you and its nice to hear from a responsable dog owner! I have absolutely no problem with dogs that are well looked after but by the time an owners saying "hes never done that before" (as if its your fault!) its really too late isnt it?
Dianna,
Thanks so much for visiting and empathizing - it seems ok today....

Dont worry about me, I really try to take everything and anything objectively!
I really appreciate your point of view here, you really had the balls to lay it out - I think youve caught the true gist of this post, in that partially the reason for the title was that I fully acknowledge that I should have tried harder to speak with them. I mean I tried...But not as hard as I could have. I really got the feeling being more pushy was not gonna do the job so I copped out and let the council do it for me.
So far - Dogs have been heard and not seen. Its lovely but how long will it last I wonder? At least he hasnt blamed us, the letter has been very anon and the dogs have been causing havoc up and down the street as well as with properties behind us. Being new to the street(like us) it really could have been anyone who dobbed them in.
So, we will see....

I think D says it perfectly... flip the tables, ya know?
I don't have any gripes about specific breeds of animals... I agree with the others here, it's the training moreover than the breed.
One advantage to living where I do... no neighbors, stop short of an old toothless farmer up the road who I never see, and my mother...
Wishing you the best, Kleo!

Flashes of memories
I am one of the last generation of Rhodesians... we are a mighty breed K! Your doggy counterparts will guard your babies well -
This is my hometown - Bulawayo! You have caught me on a very sentimental weekend!
anyways ~laughs~ totally unrelated to this I was wondering if you had ever read the book or watched the movie of 'Jock of the Bushveld' ? It is the story of a dog raised in Africa (it`s not even a ridgeback that`s how unrelated this is to your post!) - an AMAZING story - get your hands on it, you will have laughter, you will have tears, you will have even more tears and you will have an incredibly memorable experience.

I could swear you commented before too! Bloody gremlins eh?
Ash,
I'll take a look and I never realized you'd know about rodesians! Kmans been talking me into them for a long time because they are the only dog unlikely to attack stock....They dont get 'bored' like other breeds because theyre muscle mass is too high to expand the energy so theyd rather sleep!(correct me if Im wrong?)
He almost had me convinced but then I met a couple....Havnt been a dog person for many a year but these big babies tore at my heart! I thought "Now THATS a dog!"

I have updated sporadically and occasionally throughout posts.....Not too long ago Misty and her mate climbed out of the cage and slaughtered next doors chickens. Then their horse(after infecting ours with horse flu) disappeared, and the hunting two began to get free with a regular frequency. Council called again - now the dogs have vanished.
Oh....And I mysteriously made friends with Misty's daughter while fence building, a little clone of her that was actually quite sweet. Pity she's got a crap owner!
Fingertip titans,
Love the name...And huh?

I updated around here somewhere....they moved out after losing all the dogs and they lost the horse somewhere too. Its just so ridiculous - I hate for anyone to lose their animal, but how hard is it to do the right thing?
My stallion is 2 now. God help anyone or anything that invades his territory.
