Kalikapsychosis - "Perfection is what its about. When you can feel, the perfection, of creation. The beauty of physics, the wonder of mathematics all the elation of action, and reaction, and that is the kind of perfection that I want to be connected to" - Sam, hooked into the data stream

Lets talk about Lexx

If youve missed out on Lexx, then you've missed much! The first episode I was ever graced with was 'Eating Pattern' starring Rutger Houer. On weekends as a teenager I liked to stay up all night switching between my radio and the TV. I remember switching on and being instantly enchanted by the beautiful and savage Zev, played at that time by the stunning Eva Habernann. Likewise Kai, the delicious deadman captured my lusty imagination, but above all, was the Lexx itself. A LIVE ship! At this time, I had no idea that it was actually a series, season one is a collection of Tv movies. So at this late night time and immersed in vampire lore, I could not have done better than 'Eating Pattern', a lovely twist on the undead vampire theme.

It was years later when I met Kman that I realized this was a long running show with quite a following. It was a true bonding moment for us. Kman had managed to catch the entire series on Foxtel, but I had to be content with the odd episode slipping through in the midnight timeslot.

When I started watching extra episodes with Kman and his mates, I was severely disappionted to see that Zev had been replaced. Now dont get me wrong here, Xenia Seeberg is stunning, but theres a subtlety to Eva Habernann that I like a lot more. I think its the delicacy of her pale skin offset by the blue dress - perhaps Xenia would have done a lot more for me if she wasnt in red tones.

Either way, there were so many concepts for me to explore in this series - most noteably Kai and his particular brand of undeadness - specifically 'de-carbonized' now theres a theory!

While christmas shopping this year Kman spied the 'Lexx Tin' containing the ENTIRE series, and promptly purchased it. We are roughly hafway through and its lots of fun for me as I havnt seen most of the episodes. The first episode in particular was fascinating, and neither of us had seen it. We had both watched the long winded entry on series one episodes, so we knew the deal, but in episode one we actually got the details. I found it utterly fascinating how Zev was created - go that cluster lizard getting its head cut off! I have to admit, I was utterly exhausted after watching it. So much sci fi to process! Ah!

And I gotta say how much I love Kai. Not only is he utterly delicious, he's completely unkillable. Cut off his head and it just slows him down a bit. I think its his very coldness that has made him so seductive to his viewers. Each and every one of us thinks we are the ones that can crack his casing!

Theres Stan himself, the grand accidental captain of the lovely Lexx. He seems likeable because of his faults, not in spite of them. Poor old Stanly. I'd toss you a pity f*%k mate. Just let me chat to the Lexx!

The robot head 790 annoys me, Im not sure of his purpose. Also the way Zev's personality seems to change when she is remade as Xev. Then 790 turns gay and falls in love with Kai. Its all part of the wonderful ride, but I often get frustrated with story lines when they dont go where I would have gone. But that diversity is what makes the human race great, and I probably wouldnt have loved the show so much if it wasnt able to surprise me and keep me guessing. And Im only halfway through!

I've recently become quite enchanted by Kai's battle song...

[Brunnen-G Chant]

(here is the ACTUAL translation by Marty Simon)

VAIYO A-O
(Fighters fight the fight)
A HOME VA-YA-RAY
(For their home and their heart)
VAIYO A-RAH
(We fighters will win or die)
JERHUME BRUNNEN-G
(Forever we are the Brunnen G)

Got that from goldrush.com - cheers. There are a few sites dedicated to the lyrics and the pronunciation, so I guess Im not the only one having trouble singing it! Marty Simon alludes that the actors had similar problems....

"...I am of Russian decent, but truthfully the song was composed without any specific influence. The toughest part was composing a lyric based on a language
no one had heard before and getting my singers to sing convincingly and with
great passion....words which they did not understand! "
-The composer, Marty Simon.

I have been disturbing the animals greatly by singing this verse at the top of my lungs from one end of the property to the other. Its amazing when someone manages to create something on this basis - words with no specific meaning - and yet it just WORKS. We are also into season 3, where this song is the entry music, and I swear, it gives me goosebumps!

Its inspired me too. When Kman and I were in Korea we were hurt to discover the 7 horses we were to look after had no names. We swiftly named the lead mare Lexx, as she was without doubt, the most powerful destructive force. Zev was given to a beautiful, savage mare, but had to be changed to 'Katana' as none of the Koreans could pronounce a 'Z' or a 'V' effectively enough. 790 became one of the geldings. The wonderful name of Kai I awarded to a magnificent, true black gelding who was so old and thin he appeared like the living dead....I am always careful since then to name animals for specifically LIVING and STRONG characters...As Kai did like his namesake and died under my care.

I now have a fantastic idea for a future star of my stud - possibly a son of Zayfir. He will have to be true black. I will name him 'His Divine Shadow' and his advertisement will simply be a black page, the name 'His Divine Shadow' above a superb picture....and underneath the picture, "I worship his shadow". Naming horses for TV characters has become quite popular, one stud has an entire chain of horses named for The Lord Of The Rings movies.

Without doubt though, my favourite character of all is the Lexx itself. They just dont talk to it enough. I mean, I know, its an insect, with limited brain capacity, but its intelligent enough to know it loves blowing up planets, has occasional moments of brilliance. In episode 'The Web' a cry of sympathy escaped me as the Lexx says to Stan - "But I dont like webs Stanley. They might have spiders in them" Awww....How sweet! He's still a baby after all, planet eating blowing up capabilities notwithstanding. And all too often, the crew get stuck on a problem only to ask the Lexx about it and find he has a solution. I'd be on the bridge all day - "So how many compartments do you have? How fast can you travel? Can you adjust the magnitude of your weapon? Do you have a sense of smell/taste? What are your likes and dislikes? Can I pat you somewhere it feels good? Why do you always survive wormholes and space shifts and black holes? Do you have any defences?"

Actually, The Divine Shadow engineered the Lexx with no defences in case it WAS ever stolen. He had no intention of the most powerful destructive force being taken over by someone else!

Oh, and lets not forget, if you can move quickly, the Lexx's main weapon only fires in a straight line!

I almost forgot Lykka - No one knows where she came from, mysterious plant woman who wakes up needing to eat and devours people. But at least she makes it pleasant by using some kind of hallucinagen to induce a fantasy state. Theres quite a fantastic scene with Lykka and a little goth girl called Loamia. Poor Lykka is a casulty of the war against Mantrid.

So far my favourite episode of all is 'Wake The Dead'. The Lexx picks up an old shuttle that some kids 'borrowed' from one of their fathers. They made a mistake with their cryo pods and end up waking up too many years too late to get to the party. As usual, no one takes the frozen dead man seriously, and the most dominant kid orders Kai to 'Kill them all, in really cool ways...Hunt them down, one by one....Have Fun! Go on a psycho killing spree..." And Kai complies. Man, Im a sick puppy. I laughed my arse off. Best of all is the line at the end, "Be careful how you wake me" was that a smile dead man?

Kman and I were in utter stitches over last nights episode - 'Gametown' theres a scene where a saucy blonde tries to seduce Kai from the shower. At one point, he's behind her, and she grabs his hand and rubs it over her breasts. I giggled, "How many takes did they have to do for that! How the hell is he keeping a straight face!" Kman roared with laughter and concluded that Michael Mcmanus must have "taped it to his leg.." Oh, man, if you see the scene, you'll know what I mean!

I strongly recommend Lexx as a definite something different, many out there concepts, packed with sci fi fun....Just so long as you dont mind constant sexual innuendo that borders on soft porn. Dont know about you, but for me its a receipe for pleasure!
