Little voices
February 26th 2007 02:07
Trapped and swimming,
In memories deep and billowing,
of hearing nightbirds irregularly chirp
in an otherwise otherworldly stillness....
Aaah, this is the night I remember from my youth,
even if I am not now old,
I hate that chirping of insects,
speaking of heat and abominable humidity
I miss the birds.
Their innocent voices.
I miss that silence,
of streets rarely travelled,
where I used to walk alone,
no fear in my heart
bold and full of adventure I wandered
courageous in my strong youth.
Never dreaming history repeats
even within such tiny cycles
here I am up late again,
but now I long for that old torment -
It was peace.
Though I did not know it.
That lonely place
holds the key to now
a mystery I want to unravel,
a lock that must unfold.
how I long for those little voices again
and at the time......
Time, time, time.
Rarely a friend.
At the time I did not know -
how I loved those voices so
if only to hear them one more time,
I must travel those roads again
walk back along that old lonely path
down those same streets.
To break free this prison I now see
this infinite cycle of situation
and if I move further back,
even further south than my dreams -
Shall I hear my birds again then?
P.S. This ones brand new. You have all inspired me.....

It is weird how sometimes we have to travel backwards in order to go forwards isn`t it? I hope you find your birds and their twitterings tell you what you need to hear friend.

Of course I dont mind you saying so! Im glad because I had to express a feeling and I thought it was a little clumsy personally! Youve given me a great comfort.
Katyzzz,
Coming from you my dear, that is high praise indeed. Thankyou so much for the comment, Im glad it touched you so much.
Welcome Tracy,
Always good to see a new face. Once again, Im astounded my clumsy conclusions have been described so delicately...
Ash,
As usual you got it....

I really liked it... I felt the slowing of your pace here and if you keep going (slowing), I think you will truly strike gold.
Lovely imagery, although I felt the picture didn't fit in some way?
My propensity would be to go forward to the morning to greet the birds... but that's just me, a part II would be good on this one...
Looking so much forward to more....

speaking of heat and abominable humidity"
I found that part interesting. I've always loved the sound of the chirping insects -- not the buzzing locusts, they annoy me, but the gentle chirp chirp of a cricket outside the window always added some element of comfort to the night. Then again, I don't know what a cricket with an Australian accent sounds like! *LOL* - Maybe it is annoying.
Only later in life did I learn that the chirping was a mating call and that they were 'bout to get their groove on, but now that just makes me smile even more when I hear 'em. *LOL*

Aaah, yes! Thankyou! Thats what I meant by 'clumsy' and Im so glad you had the courage to say it!
Let me explain - this poem is a LITERAL meaning. I was sitting up late listening to the goddamn cicadas and remembering where I used to live it was too cold for them. All I used to hear was the irregular 'chirrupill' of the local night birds - no insects whatso ever. The streets are not metaphorical, they were real, I used to wander the streets because they were empty and I was free to do so. When I say south, I literally mean it, because we are further west now(hence the heat and insects) but I was born in Melbourne and I long to return to the colder climates. I was so full of angst at that time I did not appreciate the peace I had, and the same prison I had then I have somehow walked back into now, so many years later.
Might be a number two, but plenty more on birds and little voices, I assure you!
Wendi,
Oh, I dont mind the odd cricket, they are lucky things. Its just the climate - where we were before, you only got Cicadas for a short time, here, we get them for months on end, and at night, when the suns gone, I cant even PRETEND the weathers cool with them screaming their pleasure at the heat and humidity! We also get the odd locust, something else we never had in cooler climes. Plus cockroaches...My tastes in insects are very select! Only spiders and all forms of mantis escape death!

We get really cool stick bugs here too. I love those!
The ladybugs ya can't help but love; the only problem is, because I live in rural farm territory, they swarm quite literally by the thousands, if not millions. The first year we were here, they invaded everything! The covered the entire back side of my house. Seriously, the house looked red instead of white. They got in our vehicles, they were coming through the vents. It was the craziest thing I ever did see.
Cicadas - I know they're different than locusts, but that's what I meant. We grew up calling them locusts and I always thought they were the same. We get those here in abundance, too - moreso in Vegas than in Kentucky, but during the summer, the buzzing doesn't cease. It's like some ancient form of torture or something because of the pitch and the fact that it just does not frigging stop. *LOL*
I'm not the biggest fan of cockroaches, but I've got to give credit where credit is due. They've managed to survive incredible odds... "they say" that if there ever was a nuclear war, cockroaches would be the only thing to survive.
I swear, I was heading for the couch 45 minutes ago, but I just can't seem to pull myself away. Orble is so addicting! *LOL*

I adore ladybugs but I dont think I could have handled that! I did a lot of research on cockroaches because we had an infestation at our last house as well - THEY DO NOT SURVIVE RADIATION! Its a big myth. Radiation works on cell division, because our cells divide constantly we're goners. A cockroaches cells divide about once a week, so they still buy it, dont worry! Something I did not need to know...They chew on people when theyre asleep! They cannot pierce an adults skin but they will chew on a scab(EEEWWW) and they can bite children. I thought THAT was the myth!
Ive always loved mantis', havnt seen a stick bug in years. When my man and I were in Korea we grew to love mantis' even more - I have never seen so many goddamn flies as there are in that country, and ALL are meat eaters! Even the little fly will bite you and leave a mark, they have some of the most screwed up insects over there! I used to sit still and let the dragonflies pick flies off me, and we had 4 pet mantis' and we used to catch as many flies as we could to feed them.
