More on characters and sketching.

Before the christmas holidays I whipped up some more of my wacky visual verbals, but I may have to split these into a few posts, and the 'v v's as I call them will have to come later. Very recently the lovely Cheryl did a post on the Varga girls, and I was so very inspired. See, the thing with the v vs is that they developed because I was sick of blank pages. I used to do character representations but feel bad because it was just them on a blank page. The Varga girls showed me you dont need props - the girls will do well enough.
Of course, Im no where near Varga's class, but maybe by the time Im 40, I might be. So we are going to roll back in time here, and Ive been searching my archives for some of my earlier works. Im a lazy artist, which you will see, and thats another reason I like the vvs - they hide my mistakes!
Here are the girls, decidedly out of character. Alexondra, up first, as always. In a princessly gown, something she's not comfortable in really. Likewise, her daughter Andretta is done up in warriors garb and weilding a club, and she's much more refined, not a warrior straight up. I put Daemondra in modern human garb, as in book one we get a little visitor from earth so there is a bit of inspiration from us. Akshasa looks almost peaceful, not really a natural state for her.
At some point in their lives, all the girls visit the Star Temple. It is on the Isle Iris but not part of the Temple of the Heavens which is on the isle itself, the Star Temple, despite being close to the Temple of the Heavens, is completely unknown to the other denizens of the island. Alexondra discovers it by accident and directs her daughter there much later. When I use colour, I get REALLY lazy - its like the detail is too much for me to keep up with when Im working out a colour scheme!
By the way, dont ask me why her name is Alexondra - (Alex -Zon -Dra) the best characters write themselves and give you no reason for they way they are.
Keep in mind these images are easily 4 years old now. Even my most recent works on the book are about a year to 2 years old, and those can be found in 'kleo art'. I havnt done any work on the book - drawing or otherwise - in a very long time. I got quite enamored by my v vs.
Also note Akshasa's green tail - this shows how my ideas can change. I originally had Poison as Akshasa's father, but changed it to Ixiss which means her tail is actually white.
Andromike and Garnett are the rulers of the Star Temple, and they represent Pleasure and Desire. I shall have to hunt down a map for you, as the Isle Iris is a very beautiful and inspired place. It is called The Isle Iris because it is shaped roughly like an eye - the Temple of the Heavens and the Kingdom of Magic is on the strip of land that makes up the outer edge of the island. On the inside is a great lake and the Pupil island, on which is the Star Temple and the home of pleasure and desire.
Heres an idea Im toying with - the big birds! I love drawing birds. No wonder I cant write the damn book yet, I havnt worked out all my little details. The Mykonos may or may not feature in the novel. There is a lot about the Isle Iris I have not explored.

That's better than I can draw, now or ever. I get these beautiful images in my head, and the best I can draw is my comic, the Stick Figure Adventures, which at some point I really must scan and put online somewhere.
Interesting concepts, too.

Thanks for that...Im never happy with my drawings but thats why I keep trying. In my last few years of school I got told by teachers that I couldnt draw well enough to devote my major work to it, so Im constantly trying to improve. The v vs are really good - I think even my art teacher would agree!
As for my book, well, its a massive work, Ive plotted at least six books for it, its such a sea of information I just dont know where to start!

Start on the shore. Work your way out; and don't be scared of the horizon.
