Mouse in the sock!

June 1st 2008 03:41
Yep, I was wearing it.

Im going to try and gather together some stories of funny things that happen on property.....Im feeling a bit brain dead, so the best I can come up with is the above, but let me tell you that one....

Last night,(this morning?) before I went to bed, I noticed Z kitty and Rowdy chasing a mouse through the shoes. We have a rather serious mouse infestation problem, but, luckily, we have 5 kittys. Any mouse dumb enough to venture through the walls from laundry to kitchen is gonna get it, for sure. So, I try really hard not to save them - we have hundreds after all - and the cats deserve their entertainment and their status as mouse killers. Its no fun having mice in your cupboards, take it from me.

So, I go to bed thinking theres gonna be a mouse carcass in the hallways when I get up. No big deal. I know, there are people out there going EW! But living on property with tons of animals changes your thoughts on death and dirt.

So....I get up. No carcass, and mum says nothing. Hmm? They ate it?

I make a mental note to check in my shoes before I go outside, pull on my socks and go make coffee.

I make coffee, and toast, and begin blogging. I have to have had the socks on for....About an hour, when I reach down to absently scratch my left toe....And feel something in my sock. A cigarette paper perhaps? A scrap of fabric or inner sole?

Little voice goes - its the fucking mouse

No way! How could I not notice that? As Im pulling off my sock the bulge struggles and moves causing me to do a very girly "Shheeeat!" as I hurl the sock across the room.

It was indeed the mouse. He got put on the top of my toes, wandered about the house, and then waited for me to plant before the compute before deciding he wanted to get out. Kman tried to blame me for squishing him, but I said "Oi! I would have noticed squishing him! Hes alive, hes fine - the kittys did the damage, not me"

Trust me, Ive seen mice get chewed on and played with for hours and revive and bolt off after a drink of water. Its the exhaustion that gets em, not the torture.

Update on the herd politics.......In animals, they have intelligence like humans do, and that means levels. Kmans cat Sampson is genius level intelligent - he has his life planned out for the next 5 years. His brother Rowdy however, is a thug that cant think past the next 5 minutes. Magnus has always been clever smart, in a "What can I get for me?" kinda way. He COULD easily be a genuis horse, but thats way too much effort, he'd rather just use what he has to to get ahead. He's like his father in that way.

Magnus is following Zayf and Shakir around, softly whispering, "Fight, fight" and watching with gleaming big eyes. He's waiting for the fight he knows must come. At the moment, his pack position is ambiguos. He rules Zayf, but only some of the time. He rules Spirit, and he's the only horse that can just walk up and steal Teshans food without being kicked to a bloody pulp. He has never ruled Shakir.

(Quick sidenote - Teshan was starved before we got her and hence is very agressive about food - she even kicks out at birds trying to steal it. Magnus and Shakir are FULL brothers, exact same parents. When Shakir was a baby his mother refused to let him drink her milk unless she was tight and sore, and then he had to very carefully latch on or she would kick and bite him - You stupid baby! Magnus used to BELT her udders with his nose, latch on with teeth, and she would just look at him softly and say, "Oh, my dearest son" because of this, Shakir has a complex he's never gotten over. Shakir is now 6 and magnus 5, and to this day, Teshan still feels the same about both of them!)

Magnus is now thinking to be around at the end of the fight - theres a good chance he can beat both winner AND loser and crown himself king. Being his mothers favourite, it would be undisputed.

And Spirit is just hoping to hell he doesnt get caught in the crossfire.

Really, I started all this - on friday night I got home to find a fence lying on the ground. I made them wait for their food until I had repaired it. When it finally came time for Zayfir's food, he said, "Why did you punish me mum? Why did I have to wait? I didnt do anything wrong" I informed him that the actions of one are the responsability of the herd. He shot back that was Shakirs problem for not doing his boss job. I told him maybe it was time for a new boss.

Goddamn I could see the wheels turning.

Anyways, gotta go play with the ponies, fight with the ipod, and put my sunday roast on. Be on the watch for those mice....You never know where they might show up!

Raven,
Yup, its never ending! Got a new story already about Zayfe and the harsh lessons of love.

BTW everyone, I always wear two pairs of socks, I pulled the mouse and sock on over another pair - thats why I didnt feel the little bugger!

Mouse in sock... that's a new one! I've recently gone to war with the rodents as well, and since my cats are no longer here and my dogs could care less, I had no choice but to resort to the traps. I tried the sonar thingies first - didn't work. Moved on to the humane traps and figured out mice will rely on the buddy sistem when needed... one holds the trap door open while the other goes in to fetch the snack. And you know I actually even tried asking them politely to leave. Finally, I'd had it and the traps were put out... no more mouse problem.

What a wonderful sense of warm fuzzies I got reading about your animal family. It's been too long...

Good to see you, Kleo.

Ah... you've widened my smile tenfold. Thank you for the warm welcome, Kleo.

We're doing okay, all things considered. The kids have completed their first year back in public school, both with honors. Stinkerbelle left junior high behind having collected six achievement awards and three honors pins! Rhythm has embraced his new social role and has enjoyed the popularity he garnered with his remarkable personality. Neither have returned to the lessons they had to forfeit during the divorce.

I'm coming up on my one year anniversary at the job I started just as I was leaving Orble, and we're planning on a move in the very near future. It's time to leave this house behind and find one that's in better condition closer to town. In all this time, I've not managed many improvements at all, nor do I foresee being able to do so... the ex is interested in purchasing the house which will allow us to settle in a bit closer to town - and in a better environment all the way around.

We miss the cats and birds fiercely, but I know we did the right thing for them by finding them more secure environments in which to live. The dogs are happy as can be... each still full of personality and their own forms of wisdom (if not entertainment!).

Rhythm's preparing for a return to Vegas that'll last a month. He leaves June 17th and doesn't return until July 15th. I'll miss him like mad, but it'll do him good to get to spend time with his brother and the rest of our family that's still Vegas-based, and it'll do Stinkerbelle good to have some time and space of her own without her big brother hovering. You know, the old sibling rivalry thing.

We've faced a few trials and tribulations - in some, we kicked ass - in others, we've had our asses kicked, but such is the way of life and that's how we evolve.

I stayed away from Orble with good reason, and part of the time I was away, I was truly lost... but I never stopped thinking about those Orblers I consider friends, whose work I always enjoyed reading and benefited from.

I'm working a lot these days... have to, so my time online is extremely limited, and I'm working diligently at establishing a new blog-home that unites all of my pieces and parts. I've had a few blogs come and go between then and now, but none of them felt right. I'm pretty happy with the one I'm establishing now, although it's still just a baby and under construction.

Will do what I can to pop in from time to time and catch up with all the goings on.

I've missed you.

Wendi,
Darlin, Ive missed you too!

Like you Ive done some ass kicking and had mine kicked too....

Ive been in and out of jobs but I love my blog too much to let it go. I get half an hour in the morning to check my comments and I do my weeks posts on Sunday. My new job is really fantastic - the hours are gruellingly long but I adore the atmosphere and the job itself....Im an evil debt collector!

Sorry, 'mercantile agent'

The animals are really getting upset because they never see their mommy and that hurts me, but Im making really good money so its important I stick to it and save up to move us to a better location. We desperately need more room - we never intended to stay so long but theres been nowhere to go (Auzzie rental market is dead, we are having some serious economy issues) and no money if we did find something. Far too many animals and people on far too little space.

But aside from that I do really love my job, its very investigative and people based and the people I work with are just brilliant, Ive never felt so at home.

Im so glad you dropped in, I never stopped thinking about you and hoping you are going well, its so great to hear about the kids, Im glad they fitted in and did well cos I know you are worried.

I sent you an email awhile ago with a pic of my duck - did you get it?

anyways love dont be a stranger, so good to catch up with you, youve made my day!
