Najara - The Binky As Chick

December 9th 2007 03:05
mynah bird

NAJARA

Sweet wings flutters to my shoulder,
And whispers in my ear -

Binky As!

In the tradition of
Sweet As!

Such an affirmitive phrase,
even to the effect,

of a punched fist
high in the air,

In exhaultation.
So......

Sweet wings flutters
(razor edged wing knife tips)

by my face,
to clutch at shoulder,

and scuttle high
and low,

Her name is Najara.
She is a Cheeky chick.

The cheekiest chick in the whole wide world!
A rakka rakka rakka girl,

My Najara, Rara........
Who will always be........

Binky As!

Its hard to describe just how wonderful Najara is.....When youve bred all kinds of parrots and doves and marvelled over the smarts of a bird, nothing quite prepares you for the clear cunning of the mynah bird.....

I think I was about 10 when I said to an auntie of mine - " I like those birds!" I was watching one strut up the side of a public pool. She gave me the tirade - theyre not just UGLY theyre vicious, horrible things that destroy the environment. For years, after hearing all this rats with wings stuff, I tried to talk myself out of liking them. I guess the yellow around their eyes IS a bit ugly, I thought. I tried and tried to hate them.

I admired them silently and secretly until I lived across from a Maccas carpark - their natural habitat. It was the largest family group I had ever seen and I couldnt hide the fact they FASCINATED me.....Their social interaction was massive, more so than any other bird. Afraid of nothing, they rule whatever area they live in. If they lose a battle, they regroup and try again later. They are masters of blending into their environment, pulling tricks, stealing, raising young, acquiring territory....Oh, and orgies. In a magnificent display of scientific genius, the mynah bird wife swaps in massive orgies. Although a pair remains a pair for the sake of nesting and raising young, for the 10 minutes the orgy goes on, anything goes. What a way to widen the gene pool eh?

I got my Jara in Febuary, when a helpful friend unloaded yet another animal on me. I could not contain my excitement - I couldnt wait to train her and discover how smart they REALLY were. Her name, Najara, is in deference to said friend, as I thought a vicious animal should have a viciou name - Gorgrael, from the 'Axis' trilogy. Everyone vetoed.....So she became Najara, the magnificent character who was the only person to kick Xena's arse entirely throughout the series.
Too smart. Cannot be trained but I now anser every call in order to whats been requested. She has her own stereo, after shave bottle, dressing table mirror, balls to throw. She plays a mean game of ball.
Most interesting....Aside from her obvious and complete attachment and loyalty to me which I did not expect....Is she is still not mature. I think the mynah bird life cycle is a lot longer than I thought. And....
A mynah outside has been bringing her gifts. I'll catch him soon, one way or the other, and then, my god, within 6 weeks I'll probably have 12!
Whatever will I do?

Raven,
Glad you liked it Raven, and if I do end up breeding them, sure, you can have as many as you want! I doubt your quarantine would thank you for it though! I really meant it when I said they take over the environment!
I wonder if you have a version of them, most countries do. Ours are called 'Indian Mynah birds' but they look nothing like the ones in India now, so I stand by my reasoning that these are actually an adapted species. They seem able to adapt to any environment but dont like extreme cold or heat. That doesnt mean they cant live in it - I really think theyre impossible to kill!
And as a companion....Well, you cant get any better!

Hi k

Great to see pics of your baby. What a cutie! He really seems to have become firmly implanted in your heart... and why not with such charm! Look at how he stares at the computer screen working it all out.

Good to 'see' you

Ash,
Until further notice, its a she.
This is an animal thats bonded so closely with me even Im in awe of it....I have 3 familiars that are particularly close, Xiara, Zayfir, and Najara. Of course I love all my babies but these 3 just seem to be under my skin somehow. Since the night she arrived shes spent every second with me.....And as for 'working out' the computer, all she needs to know is when she poops down the screen, clicks keys or mouse buttons, Mommy and Daddy get very ANGRY! Since a mynah birds purpose in life is to annoy, that works beautifully!

Probably the most amazing thing is her memory. She knows EVERYTHING in the house has its place and if anything moves she gives a distress call. She quite happily flies from one end of the house to the other without an escort. A blending of independance and neediness!
