Rediscovering the Library

July 13th 2007 03:44
At one stage in my life, I lived in the library. I was a fat dweeb nerd who sat in real pain throughout recess because I was mercilessly teased. Lunch times I was safe, ensconsced in my old friends - books. I did not go near the computers, because hordes of 'cool kids' could show up there and tease me. I stayed safely in the refrence section. This made me a great academic, as I always accepted extra credit or lessons.
By the time school ended, I ruled it with an iron fist,. In year 9 I was taken in by Sam, an ultra cool girl who wore Nirvana shirts and was loved by all. She took pity on me and took me in, and after a lot of group re structuring, by year 12, our group contained the most people, including boys, thus, we ruled. I still went to the library though, and spent my time at home reading and writing. I was a cool nerd now.
Then I go off to TAFE and library is fairly regular there too. Ive got to say how I love libraries. They all have the same feel about them - quiet, nice smell, books begging to be read....Genius intelligence just hangs in the air waiting to be soaked up.
After TAFE I got a job. Occasionally over the last years Ive visited a library, but I think its been at least two or three years now since Ive been in one.
One word to describe this libraries internet? FAST! It literally SHITS all over the laptop, which makes no sense, as the laptop is fully amped up to give warcraft its greatest advantage. I do have to deal with an ancient clacky keyboard(kinda cute actually) and some screaming kids, but they'll be gone next week.
And....*blush* damn, how Ive missed the library! Just the air of it, the books, I dont think I could get bored if I stayed here all day!
What books is ultra nerd gonna look up? Genetics....Man, I really am a nerd! The one massive downfall is I dont have a coffee welded to my right hand, no ciggi hanging from my lips. I was gonna chew some gum but some kids got thrown out for that.....So I better not.
So Im really quite glad I was forced outta home and comfort zone......Despite the drawbacks(a train just went past) the library is a great place to rediscover. Armed with my new library card I shall set out next, to teach myself genetics and hunt down some mind bending fiction.....
See ya at the library!

Kleo,

Genetics is still under mind bending fiction, don't go down there. They'll have you unravelling DNA for years and you'll still be way behind.

Good intentions [except the cigs] enjoy that library and I nearly missed you, just caught you as I'm on the run.

Happy Days,

katyzzz

Kleo,

I hear ya, I love the library! My sister and I recently moved to a new place. And I was so stoked because at the end of the street (probably 500m away) was a library!!!!

Go nerds!!

Hi Kleo,

I used to spend a lot of my breaks at school in the library too. The books i used to take out were books like; comics, Asterix, biographies of film stars, dark fiction. Like you, i was endlessly teased, for being a miller shirt wearing tomboy and late developer (wow big crimes) so it was my haven.

Of course then the library books changed to Bananas in Pyjamas and Zucchinis in Bikinis and the like. Now i just hang out in the Literature section and read poetry and writers bios, and end up with 20 books.

Good things have settled down for you.

~Lily

Katyzzz,
Damn tiny library didnt have any genetics books, but I did find a real gem of a book!Horse breeding for the last 5000 years!
Kylie,
Great to know Im not the only (hot) nerd around!
Lily,
I was fat. They called me 'book whale'. Ive lost 25kgs since then....If high school arseholes see me on the street they dont recognise me. When Im introduced, they say "no way. NO WAY!"
Settled, sorta, will it ever be? Sometimes I think I just enjoy conflict!
I got an excellent book - not actually genetics but down those lines. Horse breeding for the last 5000 years - finally I'll understand how 'eohippes' became an 'arab'!

Kleo,

I have to agree wth you as well, there's nothing quite like a library for peace, quiet and reflection...

I absolutely love them! Because you can go anywhere, be anyone, and learn new things you never even knew existed!

Better than a world tour huh?

Great post, and glad to see you in better spirits today!

Peace and white light,

Nick

Hi Kleo

I also recaptured my zest for the library when I was in a similar position as you...ie Internet problems. I enjoyed being in there, the peace, the books and a sense of being part of my community,

Yeah, I was happy with my deal with my local library. They even have DVDs and CDs that you can borrow for free. What a system!

And stuff all those people that were cruel to you at school, Kleo. I also found sanctity in my school library at times. Thank goodness schools have them, they seemed like the most safe place for me,quiet, peaceful and quite comfy.

hi K

ahhhh the library - I could actually live in one and be quite happy. I`m not into the new libraries buzzing with conversation and photocopy machines and backpackers coming in and out to use the net... but I still go there.

The best library I have been into was when I was doing my Degree and searching for some old Art History papers. It was a huge building with really high ceilings, all wooden floors and row upon row of tattered wooden bookshelves housing dusty books which probably hadn`t been opened in decades. I was in heaven! Quiet as a tomb and the smell.... oooh glorious!

Yep I have to agree I love the library.
