Sketches and Stationary
April 23rd 2008 00:19
If you're a writer or a sketcher, or like me, both, you feel a tremendous sense of godlike importance in the stationary isle. See, it was crowded last time I went, a place that is usually scarce except for people buying cards, was full of people who had to have paper and pens.
Nose high in the air, lofty expression fixed firmly on my face, I swanned through the crowd. Where they confusedly looked at the bright colours and many different types of paper, I cut through the pretty gem like colours for my prize.
Cos unlike them, I knew exactly what I was there for.
I have 2 mechanical pencils - One is a HB, 5mm led. The other is a 2B 7mm led. I also have a standard 2B pencil, a ruler, a large eraser and some fine tipped gel pens. Ive been sketching at first, just in my journal(the lined pages) to make me feel its 'not important' no pressure. Recently I got sick of the lines, so switched to copy paper. Copy paper is atrocious for sketching. Not being acid free, it actually repels the led and a strong black line is damn near impossible. So, on this fated day, I was looking for 7mm 2B leds, and a nice book of acid free paper.
It mystifies me - When I stride into a supermarket isle people go all atwitter. They peer into my trolley or basket as if seeing what Ive bought will help with their selection. This time I was faced with downright hostility - how dare I knife through the pen buying crowd, and worse, how dare I know exactly what I want from this glittering and multi coloured wall of confusion.
But the point is, that none of these people know what they want because they just dont use enough stationary. I think thats such a crime honestly, who doesnt love it? It makes me wonder if I sketch just because I like stationary so much. I dont like the new trend of it breaking after a select amount of time - my HB mechanical pencil is 6 years old and still going strong, all the others die after a few hard lines.
Enough rubbish.
I gotta say Im bored. Im not shocking myself, not scaring myself. I gotta get back to teeth and nails and blood honestly. This vanilla shit is just not working. Oh, I love the snow gum, but God, how dull is that pic? I want to do another wall, remember the wall?
I love the wall because of the QUOTES. Remember theres a bibliography(I wasnt gonna tell you where but...) IN THE HAND that tells you the texts and poems the quotes are from. I love this and I want to do another. Ive gotta break out into coloured pencils too....
This is a theme I rather like....You might remember the snake and the woman from a while ago, they were in miniture then. The last two are on acid free paper and you can see the difference, but man, does it smudge! Of course sometimes thats exactly what you want, I just find it frustrating.
Hopefully I'll get some progress done soon - another wall, and some colour. Colour confuses me though. It always ends badly. Except when Im painting - I can always let it dry and come back and layer it again.
Ive been keeping my hands busy in another way - playing Tomb Raider. O boy the T REX IS DEAD!!! WHOO HOO! I just jumped on and very casually killed him first go. Then ripped through the levels. Ive gotta check out a walkthrough - I use 'Stella's walkthroughs' on the net and I have for years, Stella always has all the details. I dont like to read it BEFORE I do the level - what a way to take the fun out! I go through, then read the walkthrough to pick up anything I missed, which, being a good Tomb Raider, isnt much. Im up to 'St Francis Folly' and the first game was a MASTERY of puzzle. Bloody levers and doors and Greek Gods and a towering, towering level where the greatest danger was putting a foot wrong. It looks like fun all over again.....I get GOOSEBUMPS watching the demo, Anniversary was such a good idea if anyones listening!
I have to admit something to you. On our 12th day of rain Im finally starting to get sick of it. I still get exhilerated by the drumming of it on the tin roof, I still get that cosy sound hearing roar and knowing Im safe within. But the washing machine wont dry out which means it wont work, I need to wash the sheets which wont dry as I have nowhere to hang them even if I could wash them, the horses feet are rotting and the MUD god, the mud! Walking 5 metres feels like 10kms as I fight not to slide down the hill!
Teshan is gracelessly scratching her ass on the tree out front. Feet splayed, mane and tail flying, jaw disorganised and tongue out waving her huge ass back and forth. I thought she was a lady of class?
BUT I have to fence today. We have and electric fence INSIDE the barbed wire fence that rings the house, and the back section of it that leads out the back is not covered. It means horses IN the houseyard cant touch it, but those OUTSIDE who are jealous of those within, begging for hay or just trying to eat the grass between the two fences, can lean their 600kgs of horsey weight on the barbed wire and push it over. And in wet weather....Well. Yesterday I noticed two pickets out and the top strand has snapped like elastic. Ive got some more posts I need to bang out, but I should really fence first....Goddammit! WHERE are my fucking tools? I used to have a 'fence fixing kit' which is kind of essential on property - just a bucket with hammer, pliars, spare wire and sissors, some electric tape and nails. But then kman needed the hammer, mum needed the pliars and FUCK knows where theyve ended up. I swear, heaven on Earth would simply mean we all decided the same place was the right place for all this equipment!
And then, once Ive pulled out pickets, put in new pickets, repaired and restrung the wire, I'll have to hunt down electric tape and pins so I can electrify that section so it doesnt happen again. You know, all these years I thought horses actually RESPECTED wire. Fuck, I dont know where I got that idea from - they bulldoze it! So I'll complete all of the above - probably with a 'horsey helper' stealing my tools all the way (Zayfir and magnus have been known to hurl the hammer or mallett) then I'll have to walk the whole property to make sure my line isnt snagged or touching - even a plant can interrupt the charge in the wrong place and hopefully turn it on to success......I dont even know if I have enough tape yet.
So, out I go.....Like a warrior. Hope this freezing wind keeps up for a few hours, its blowing the rain back to the mountains.....

My morgan and quarter horse mare used to help me mend fences, she was a rotten hag who'd steal my tools and take off to the extremes of her pasture in a game of keep away; until I met that girl I didn't know horses had a sense of humor and would snigger at you.

Get your K's straight!
What a great story! I love to hear about horsey helpers. I think Zayf was only 1 when he realized he could lift the mallett and throw it at you. Magnus has been a certified horsey helper for years.
When I fence now I have to make sure Zayf is far away. He pays attention to what you are doing. If its post and rail, he chews the nails back out. If its wire, he undoes it, if its electric, he tests it until he finds a weak spot. Bloody colts!

Oh yea, April was a pistol; when I rode her, the first five minutes were always a bucking fest and we'd tear up the neighbors wheat field or my yard a bit and when she was satisfied that I belonged there, she'd become the perfect lady.
If I put a child on her back she'd be as smooth as a ride on air; but not for me, it was test his mettle every time.
I really miss her.
