Kalikapsychosis - "Perfection is what its about. When you can feel, the perfection, of creation. The beauty of physics, the wonder of mathematics all the elation of action, and reaction, and that is the kind of perfection that I want to be connected to" - Sam, hooked into the data stream
When Im creating, it has to be original. I dont worry overly much in stories, because some things are tried and true and quite simply, have to be as they are. However, in poetry, or in sketching, its not good enough to do something common. The explanations and imagery in poetry must be spine tingling, the sketches something that makes you turn your head and go..."Um, What?"
Late last year I made aquiantance with the Green Fairy. I knew of Absinthe's reputation, but had never seriously considered trying it. I thought I might have trouble finding it, at least, in its pure form. I did a little research and found that 'Green Fairy Absinth' made in the czech republic is now the common brand. Made with distilled wormwood - the only alcohol made in this way - it utilizes the natural ingrediant of thujone to stimulate the brain and nervous system, instead of depressing it like regular alcohol. Absinthe originally gained a bad rap because it was yummy and soft and could be drunk for hours with very pleasing results. This caused a launch of bootleg brands made imperfectly, and hence, the insanity and death ensued. It was a long time before Absinthe could be sold again.
Now, I know, even though its a lovely, luminescent green, and its a higher proof of alcohol than anything Ive ever drunk, Im not going to instantly start seeing green fairies. One thing is for sure - you are careful with this stuff. If you want to get drunk, choose beer. A bottle of Absinth is a journey, each glass a magnificent ride on the way to its end. You enjoy it, you savour it, you dont abuse it.
On my first Absinth trip, I created these.
The word spirals I really love. Its realy just an extension of my usual visual verbals. It is also comforting to know no one will ever read it, from start to finish, at least. That, I assure you, is utterly impossible.
The visual verbals here are a lot more verbal than usual, but I have my characters developing steadily amidst the words. Both the spirals and the visual verbals are unblockers of a sort - like when you make a mind map to work out where you want your project to go? They help me loosen up my mind and my fingers to move on to other things.
Before the christmas holidays I whipped up some more of my wacky visual verbals, but I may have to split these into a few posts, and the 'v v's as I call them will have to come later. Very recently the lovely Cheryl did a post on the Varga girls, and I was so very inspired. See, the thing with the v vs is that they developed because I was sick of blank pages. I used to do character representations but feel bad because it was just them on a blank page. The Varga girls showed me you dont need props - the girls will do well enough.
Of course, Im no where near Varga's class, but maybe by the time Im 40, I might be. So we are going to roll back in time here, and Ive been searching my archives for some of my earlier works. Im a lazy artist, which you will see, and thats another reason I like the vvs - they hide my mistakes!
Here are the girls, decidedly out of character. Alexondra, up first, as always. In a princessly gown, something she's not comfortable in really. Likewise, her daughter Andretta is done up in warriors garb and weilding a club, and she's much more refined, not a warrior straight up. I put Daemondra in modern human garb, as in book one we get a little visitor from earth so there is a bit of inspiration from us. Akshasa looks almost peaceful, not really a natural state for her.
At some point in their lives, all the girls visit the Star Temple. It is on the Isle Iris but not part of the Temple of the Heavens which is on the isle itself, the Star Temple, despite being close to the Temple of the Heavens, is completely unknown to the other denizens of the island. Alexondra discovers it by accident and directs her daughter there much later. When I use colour, I get REALLY lazy - its like the detail is too much for me to keep up with when Im working out a colour scheme!
By the way, dont ask me why her name is Alexondra - (Alex -Zon -Dra) the best characters write themselves and give you no reason for they way they are.
Keep in mind these images are easily 4 years old now. Even my most recent works on the book are about a year to 2 years old, and those can be found in 'kleo art'. I havnt done any work on the book - drawing or otherwise - in a very long time. I got quite enamored by my v vs.
Also note Akshasa's green tail - this shows how my ideas can change. I originally had Poison as Akshasa's father, but changed it to Ixiss which means her tail is actually white.
Andromike and Garnett are the rulers of the Star Temple, and they represent Pleasure and Desire. I shall have to hunt down a map for you, as the Isle Iris is a very beautiful and inspired place. It is called The Isle Iris because it is shaped roughly like an eye - the Temple of the Heavens and the Kingdom of Magic is on the strip of land that makes up the outer edge of the island. On the inside is a great lake and the Pupil island, on which is the Star Temple and the home of pleasure and desire.
Heres an idea Im toying with - the big birds! I love drawing birds. No wonder I cant write the damn book yet, I havnt worked out all my little details. The Mykonos may or may not feature in the novel. There is a lot about the Isle Iris I have not explored.
Ok, so we have some ideas to discuss now. I suppose, you're looking at the sketches, and your reading the outline, and your going, yeah, cool, and? Whats the problem Kleo? Write that fucking book!
For all are bound to be what they shall become....Yeah sure you think you understand and you look at yourself and say oh yeah, I know thyself ......HA! You goddamn fool can you imagine being in another shape than what you are?! Does not the shape of human feel like a cage a prison ugh the bones.....The bones that make up the cage the flesh that wraps around them and strangles the very spirit out of you ugh what a horrid shape it is this one....Wouldnt you rather be mammoth and created out of yourself by yourself and in the correct shape the true shape that is the universal shape the only shape of the universe and all the things in it....Think about it now...
Im sure that there is a definition of art being taught in classrooms right now. I know I was taught one in my studies, and that there were specific descriptions for cubisim, fauvisim, pointalisim, impressionisim, modern and post modern and more! I always thought, so, ok, what we are doing now is considered post modern, what happens when we got beyond post modern? Surely there must be another category....
Instead what I believe is happening now is that every artist or creative person is creating their own definition within their own work. We do not restrict ourselves to mediums - I was told for my year 12 artwork I was a sculptor, thus I should sculpt. Really, collage is my forte, I consider myself a writer first, then sketcher, painter, scultptor. I express my creativity through all these mediums, including photography now, and I believe the very definition of art now has moved on to a place where it can no longer BE defined by any particular form or medium. If you think creatively, and express it, your an artist, no matter what your medium. My best friend(who barely gets pencil to paper for anything) once told me sex is art. I tend to agree
