Kalikapsychosis - "Perfection is what its about. When you can feel, the perfection, of creation. The beauty of physics, the wonder of mathematics all the elation of action, and reaction, and that is the kind of perfection that I want to be connected to" - Sam, hooked into the data stream

Sketching The Beast

October 21st 2008 01:37
The Beast first appeared in 'sketches' (I will relate posts at the bottom) as I was that inspired by her and her Conversations with The Devil that I decided to play around with her form. She's incredibly fun to draw - human and creature in one, she shapeshifts and moulds and that makes for really interesting drawing. Thus far, the most fun Ive had sketching has been with Akshasa, one of my dragon girls. The humans are difficult, they always have to look the same. Alexondra is tall, with an oval face and long limbs, but is a warrior, so her shoulders have to be broad and arms and legs strong and capable. Though she is beautiful, her strength is her defining feature and it must come out in the sketch. She is the one character to stretch across all 7 books of the series, so that makes her harder to draw. She can be found on the blog - I am going to check the 'sketch links' post and make sure she's linked up to it. I may even do a post just connecting the sketches from the story.

Andretta, Alexondra's daughter, is slightly easier to draw with her heart shaped face and black hair. She's shorter than her mum, more beautiful, and though she does some fighting in book 3 or 4 she is not primarily a warrior. She inherited her mums need to wander and her magical talent - The rest is all her...Fathers?

Andrettas daughter Daemondra IS a shapeshifter, but she cannot pull her body too far out of human shape. Her father was Chilon, the Defender of the Light, one of the original dragons, made, not born. Daemondra has skin the same colour as her grandmothers - pale but tan where Andretta is snowy tanless white(like her father) - but the texture of Daemondra's skin is that of scales. I have had fun drawing Daemondra for years, as she wraps her body sinously around the bodies of the dragons of the rival army. She does not appear until book 5, she is Andretta's big mistake, the forgotten accident. The daughter of Chilon and Andretta was supposed to be the saviour in the war, not the enemys greatest weapon. Daemondra looks like her grandmother - Tall, oval faced with a warriors strong body, but she has the black hair of her mother and grandfather, without her mother's heart shaped hairline.

Akshasa is the daughter of Daemondra. In an almost identical move to that her mother performed, Daemondra flees the battlefield leaving behind the devastation of her betrayal - and a daughter. Akshasa is the product of Daemondra's greatest shame and most important mission - the seduction of the Prince Ixiss. Akshasa is double dragon bred and raised by the serpents of evil. She is as tall as her great grandmother, with the warriors body naturally bequethed to her, with her grandmothers beautiful, flawless skin, heart shaped face and inky black hair. In Akshasa, the blood of dragon cannot be hidden, as her eyes are at least three times the size of a humans, and bisected by the slitted reptilian pupil.

So you can see that drawing my girls has 'rules' that I must abide by. Actually, screw the link, here. I know Ive put this pic up lots of times - here it is again.

Theres the girls. I think the reason this work GETS no work is because of the rules involved. Theres a few things Ive been wanting to do, while I have all this time on my hands. Ive got repaint the ouija board, work on the book of shadows, play a magic game against myself, (black against white, very illuminating, better than Tarot) and get out THE BOOK....Just to read and make notes. Nothing fancy, nothing scary. Its really hard when you have created specific ways of the planet moving and you have to go through and cross out anywhere is says 'day' because your planet doesnt have days.

But back to The Beast. I started scribbling her in the sketches awhile back, and it was from the back, reaching her clawed hands upward. No discernable face. Strange symbols printed on her skin. Flowing human and creature. Heres her evolution.

I wanted a comparison against the Beast, so we have a perfect human woman and a dragon. The Beast is mid shift, not being anything.

This one was MEANT to have the Beast in it....I got so enamored by eyes looking out through tree roots I never got to the point.

I wanted to show the Beast attacking - two faced, the ultimate duality. And that, despite having two faces, it doesnt mean they argue with one another. As I was drawing this one Kman went past and said affectionately, "My freaky baby" I looked up - "Why freaky?" Spied the Beast's thrown back head..."Oh.Yeah right."

The Beast isnt as perfect as she could be, but the face is good - halfway between Beast and Beauty. She is held by the silken ribbon - anyone know the story of Frenrir? The great Norse wolf, who was imprisoned through trickery and a fragile, silken ribbon. Sometimes that which is required to restrain a Beast is the most delicate of materials.
