SUPANOVA 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 29th 2009 02:53
I remember the first time I ever went to Big Day Out. It was many a year ago, when it was still cute, without the 'force' that eventually became necessary. I remember feeling like I had come home, like I was finally amoungst my people. But in my Last Big Day Out, I felt scared. Like these were no longer my people, but a random assortment of freaks I had to defend against rather than converse with.
Welcome to Kleonaptra's first ever SupaNova. Truly, now, I did come home - I was amoungst, my people. Kman and I, from hitting the sprint platform at Lidcombe to foray out to Olympic Park, were suddenly and quite refreshingly, mixing with our kind of people. People who spoke OUR language.
Now, Im ashamed to say, despite that, I did not catch the actual identities of some of the costumes. I can wager guesses, but Im still not sure about some of them. because this is going to be a story told in pics. And, understand me, not all of these are good photos. My reason is - I hate posed shots. Kleo likes ATMOSPHERE shots. So, theres a lot of people from the back, from the side, eating, taking photos themselves or in other strange positions. Most importantly, moving. Theres a lot of ghosts in the pictures, as we were all moving very fast. I hope you like them, and catch where Im coming from - in going through them, Ive said, 'oh, what a shame. I didnt have time to set up light/texture/structure properly...' but, thats not actually, completely important. What is important is to capture the spirit of the day - people together, HAPPY people, all immersed in what they love most, mixing with people who love it all as well!
ACTION!!
On arrival, Kman and I joined a line. We had no idea where it went - there were simply lines everywhere. After some brief perusal, we learned some were for ATMs, some were for tickets, and some were for pre paid tickets. It took us about 15mins to find the correct line. This is a shot of the pre paid ticket line spiralling out behind us. The lack of signage and helpful members was remarked upon - the guy in front of us theorized (in a conspiratol, conspiracy theory tone) that someone must be doing a psychology experiment. I agreed.
While waiting in line, we saw the first of the costumes. Kman told me where they were from, but I forget...Anyways, they are super cool, these guys even clanked as they moved!
IN! Kman led me in a demented spiral, missing out on half the stalls in his desperate search for the WoW stand. Upon acquiring some free posters, we wandered back outside for Kman to have a smoke and find an ATM. I stayed by the door while he went to join an ATM line. To my surprise, he was back in 3 minutes, and the ATM line hadnt moved. "I went over the road" he explained. Theres a 7/11 over there that people had not noticed, I guess. I say, "Baby, what the hell was that? We were only there for 2 minutes before you had to come out again!" "Im overwealmed!" He admitted bashfully.
Which reminds me - seconds after plunging into the crowd, I heard a girl moan "damn my agoraphobia!" It made me think - just about all the people here have social phobia and issues with crowds. Including me. Yet I was comfortable, and so were most of them. The energy of the crowd almost had a sweetness to it - like we were all on the same wavelength.
Back into the crowd we go! I tell Kman - we are going to work our way SYSTEMATICALLY through the aisles to ensure we see every stall. Right? Wrong.
We were only seconds into our systematic approach when it was announced that Richard Hatch was chairing a Battlestar Gallactica seminar in the JB HiFi room. VROOM! Up the stairs we went to get a seat. There were some interesting characters up there too...
Kman shrieked - "Its that Kill Bill Chick! Whatsaname! With the mace!" "Oh," I answered, "You mean GoGo. Trust you to pick the Japanese school girl outta the crowd baby..."
Managed to snap Vadar preening for the cameras before we ran into the JB room for the battlestar seminar...
The seminar begins! He asks us how we are. In a very polite nerdly way, we answer meekly, "Goood" he cries, "C'mon! Is that all! Gimme some more words!" In a burst of confidence, Kleo gathers her powerful voice and bellows "FRACKIN AWESOME!!" deafening poor Kman. Richard turns around and points wildly. "Frackin Awesome! I like that!" And gets into his seminar. We find out that revisting Battlestar had actually been his idea, and he shows us the original trailer he made for his revision. It was very different, and he tells us how the ideas all got turned over to new people, and he bailed out. He was very surprised to be asked to come back in, and agreed, because he loves both shows, and likes the new way its gone.
He also said that his character in the new Battlestar has always spoken the truth. Even if the audience believes that he is a manipulator, after power, no. Thats not the truth of the character - he really is looking out for the human race. And for me, and everyone else waiting for the second half, we are in for shocks!
He showed us some footage of old and new cast, in interviews, and a gag reel that was hilarious. I am ashamed to say I left early towards the end of the gag reel..My bladder was bursting and I couldnt stay to the end. Sorry Richard!
Out we pop for another smoke, and back in...And Kman says mildly, "Hey. Theres Sonic" "SONIC!!" Screams Kleo, and starts chasing him down. "OMIGOD! SONIC!!"
Sonic was waiting good naturedly for lots of little kids to come out of the crowd while happy demure parents snap innocent shots. When suddenly a full grown woman (In gothic gear) hurls her camera at a grinning Kman and comes flying out of the crowd screaming at the top of her lungs - "ME NEXT! ME NEXT!!" and throws her arms around the poor hedgehog. I swear I scared the poor dude, but I was excited. SONIC!!!! He was so fluffy and soft. I never imagined!
We begin again, the attempt at a systematic perusal. Instantly I am distracted by the Ring Wraith. Awesome costume!
Now we're moving along nicely, and I purchase some anime bookmarks for a buck each, a mad eagle/pheonix type thing for four bucks....a Taurus artwork in anime style. Kman finds a Gigabachi helicopter from Ghost In tHe Shell Second Gig, and its not till we get home that we find the bonus Tachcoma. This same stall had awesome figures of Misato Kasuragi, and my dear Rei Ayanami, and a rather cool Ritsuko holding a fag.
Herein do we see Kleos great love of reflection. We got some way cool purchases, with crowd in the background. Very cool.
Just how long do these dudes spend on their hair? Like WOW its cool. I adore Mario just flitting by in the bottom corner...
Around and round we go....Theres Auzzie wrestling to watch, which I find very fun. Some major things go on the other stage, like a 'Spirited Away' play, and most of the featured costumes. On the way around I pick up a Dragon shirt - gorgeous grey and silver on black, dragon wrapped around a tree. This stall has my favourite artist, Louis Royo all over them. And.....Stainless steel rings. My favourite stuff! I have a new engagement ring now, after a brief period of try ons, I settled on the simple carved snake. It feels good to be owned again, decidedly chained down. As much as I love steel, Im thinking of Iron for the wedding ring. Theres much that can be done with cold iron....
Throughout the day, Kman and I discussed what we might be next year. I had settled on Lara, pretty sure. Id love to do Xena - especially since no one these days seems to remember her. But thats a hard costume. So I was pretty set on Lara, and happy about the fact there were no others. Kman wasnt sure. But we were sure that we'd dress up.
"...And Buffy staked Edward. The End" The days winding down. The crowds getting thinner. Im pouring through the books and DVDs at anime bargains when I hear the shop assistant say in diasgust, "Thats a find"
'That' is a laughing man shirt, original logo, with the laughing man symbol and the script - 'one of those deaf mutes' around the side. Obviously, 'That' was not meant to be here at the end of the day, pristine, wrapped in its plastic, when everything is now reduced to FIVE dollars!!
Hoping for a similar find, Kleo dives into the five dollar bin. You would not believe it, but I found something EVEN BETTER......
Its nondescript, as I pull it out. Cream coloured, small sized. As I unfold it, it takes a moment for the many black lines - that resemble...blueprints? - to come into focus.
It all comes to me in a rush. 'Original black lion components' 'defender of the universe' 'VOLTRON'.....I think I screamed in excitement. Its the original line drawing of the black lion - Voltrons torso - from the first ever original transformers. I had Voltron. I had the lions. I had their pilots. I was a full time follower of Voltron before Optimus Prime in his (admittedly) wonderous magnificence took over the title of 'Transformer'
FIVE BUCKS!!!! Yes, please!
Camera full and body worn we decided to finish, leaving regretfully, and desperately awaiting the next year, when we may come again to the home away from home......
