Kalikapsychosis - "Perfection is what its about. When you can feel, the perfection, of creation. The beauty of physics, the wonder of mathematics all the elation of action, and reaction, and that is the kind of perfection that I want to be connected to" - Sam, hooked into the data stream

The beautiful and magnificent cold

June 10th 2009 01:50
Im steeped in peace today.

After yesterdays frenzy, the house is clean, I have one little load of washing left, and some wood to collect, but the major things are done. One thing that threw me right off yesterday was work ringing me and asking me to go in - I hate that, I mean HATE THAT - because I wanted to, I need the money, but goddamn it, I was up to my ankles in water and trying to put my house back together, I had more washing on and a nice big hole in the front fence I had to fix. Will they ring me when I can actually go? No, dont be ridiculous. They will only ring me for asurprise shift when its utterly impossible.

This morning I put some more CDS into my mix, one of which is the long forgotten 'Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron' CD. Right now I have the score 'Run Free' by Hans Zimmer playing.

People. You must hear this music. Now, I love my Disney soundtracks, but this one in particular is all about horses, and the cadance will blow your mind! It is hooves pounding, drumming on the soil and hard packed earth, it is bucking and hurling hind feet to the sky for nothing but joy. It is a dip to the side to shoulder the mate in the herd, and it is racing racing and racing, throwing out the front hooves and straining the chest muscles to garner speed and more speed......Have you seen a horse get high from his own running, tossing his mane in supremacy, drinking the wind through his nostrils as if the wind is the only fuel he needs to run for eternity? Have you seen hooves tracking side to side as if he knows in his bones, hes a dancer? Its the most inspiring thing in the world, and to me, it is proof that all any creature needs is life running through him to be happy. A horse is one creature that is ultimately happy with his evolution.

And to the movie makers, lets see some more stallion stories eh?

The cold that was promised to me earlier in the year has been a long time coming. May was particularly balmy. The nights heralded a great promise, but the days couldnt follow it up. But yesterday, on the fierce breath of the wind, the ice had come. I know, its snowing very nearby, and the wind is bringing it right to me. Despite the layers of clothing, the still cold feet and the creaky fingers, I cant help but enjoy it. It will be even better out in it - Im gonna put these new songs on the ipod and get out there amoungst it. Gathering wood is brilliant for the soul. Relaxing, life affirming, meditative. I MIGHT even get it all worked out well enough to get in early and do some work on the shadow book. I did a big double sp[aghetti yesterday, so no cooking tonight, but I would like to bake something...

As I was just saying to Jason on the MasterChef post, I might tackle a tea cake. I usually cheat and use a packet mix, BUT the only ingrediants for tea cake are flour, eggs, and vanilla. Im sure I could find some sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle on it. You might think Im beckoning disaster to do it without a reciepe, but in baking, knowing your consistancy is all you need. Just feel it out, the batter will always do its work, you just have to be a good guesser.

Back to the ponies now. I got hold of Teshan and removed her rug, which means we'll have to chase each other around again tonight when I want to put it back on. But she is not the most difficult of my horses right now. Not even Spirit is. (yes. He is named for the above movie. Mum is SO creative in naming things.) My most difficult horsae right now is Shakir.

He bolted around this morning and utterly refused to have his rug off. He's probably sweating a bit by now - its quite a heavy rug. It was just the look on his face, ner ner, you arent catching me, no way, cos I said so.....And I thought, my God boy, you truly are, your mothers son. Cutting off the nose to spite the face just on principle. And the laying back of ears, threatening me with teeth and hooves - thats his father in him. Teshan was never mean. Irrational, frustrating, but never meam. Shakir is mean to the point of cruelty, and when you add the irrationality and frustration, you've got one rouge of a horse.

As is usually the equation with horses, he looks magnificent. He's a natural athlete who could win at any discipline he chose. So of course he's bound to be insane.

You might wonder how I dealt with the situation. I could have done my demented chicken dance - which all my neighbors saw on the weekend when Spirit pushed over a fence (he actually bent the star pickets) - and involves stomping and sharp noises with very wing like arm movements while I tantrum. I restrained myself, and decided the most evil thing I could do was give Zayfir extra breakfast. Zayfir's only 3 and a half, and all the boys got breakfast right up until they were 5, to help them grow. But Shakir just cant take it when Zayfe gets grain and he doesnt. So I persisted with trying to unrug for a few minutes, when it became clear that one of us was going to have to die for the duel to end, I shrugged, wandered off to the shed for a scoop of pellets and made sure he saw me give it to Zayfe, and walk away.

His eyes nearly bugged out of his head. Ears pricked nostrils flaring, he stomped his foot like the kid who didnt get a lolly. But its an empty victory. He will make me pay for it this afternoon. What can I do with him? The worst and the best of both parents, with an attitude thats far too close to my own, I need a safe arena and unlimited time to work him, nothing else will solve it.

At least, I did not repeat the same mistakes with Zayfe.

You Know Lilla, I think Spirit was actually Dreamworks. I watched it again the other day, and I love it because even though everything is exgeratted, as cartoons are, the facial expressions and body language of horse communication have been perfectly captured. The relationship of Rain and the Indian boy is just like me and Zayfe. We play like that, he protects me from other horses or humans. Its that relationship that makes horses utterly worth while!

And of course, his exuberant joy at being what he is! The cats wish they were bigger, the dogs long for bigger jaws, the ducks want wider wingspans.....But horses are totally happy to be as they are.

Even Kman said - when Spirit does his little dances - I know thats real, I've seen Zayfe do it! And do you remember the cliff scene? Indian - "Oh, No" Spirit - "Oh, YES!" That is SUCH a horse answer!

On the topic of Disney soundtracks, I never get sick of Tarzan, I have it on my iPod. I always loved Phil, but mix in a jungle beat and its just heaven.

The Kandle heeter is quite amazing - I shall keep that in mind for when electricity fails us (which Im sure its bound to) I was always worried about having braziers outside - now I have a better option!

But for now, the wood fire is free!

hahaha Kleo, yes that scene on the cliff is amongst the best in the film and it makes me larf to think of you and Zayfe in communication like that. I have that type of telepathy with birds and Ginger, and you are right, they wouldn*t mind being an inch or two taller.

Right on! Couldn*t agree more, I am sure people think I have cracked when I pull up at the lights and I have it on full throttle *chuckle* as if I care what they think ~ I can certainly see where you are coming from on this score. . .

I thought they would be a brilliant investment in a power outage, camping ad all sorts of cituations (as you say). I am glad it added some fuel to your options fire. Aah log fires, nothign beats them although my memories of chainsawing the wood out in the frozen wilderness of the snowy mountains each Sunday, does nothing to warm my heart Brrrrrrrr! however, you are right, it was free and so were we!

Zayfe and I do speak in greater depth than the other horses. I speak fluent horse so I am able to communicate with them all, but Zayfe really is something else. Im not quite riding him yet, but we are almost there. He's not an adult yet, so its not fair to expect him to carry me. But I have sat on him a few times. I originally learnt to ride on a big property where we did lots of 'bush bashing' and to see Tesh creaking around in her old age is quite sad - we used to gallop down mountains.

Im always amazed by how well that movie captured a stallions attitude. The carefree niavety....The toughness and the innocence. One media watch continues to bug me though - it takes a year to grow a mane, yet when he returns to his herd the twin foals are still tiny. And I think Rain should have had a little buckskin foal running by her side by that time too....

Not just Tarzan...'Whole new world' from Aladdin brings tears to my eyes! Love that song....
People would be shocked by my ipod selection I swear....Phils early work, cartoon soundtracks....Mixed with Cher, death metal and regurgitator...Oh, and Manson and Mily Cyrus!

Our fire is really tiny, but heats the house nicely, and we have more than enough wood. At the last property, even though it was bigger, we had a total of 6 trees. Wood collecting was a challenge.

We dont have a chainsaw, even though that would be handy, and I know how to use it. Still, I enjoy my axe. One of my favourite tools.
