The definition of art
March 22nd 2007 03:51
Im sure that there is a definition of art being taught in classrooms right now. I know I was taught one in my studies, and that there were specific descriptions for cubisim, fauvisim, pointalisim, impressionisim, modern and post modern and more! I always thought, so, ok, what we are doing now is considered post modern, what happens when we got beyond post modern? Surely there must be another category....
Instead what I believe is happening now is that every artist or creative person is creating their own definition within their own work. We do not restrict ourselves to mediums - I was told for my year 12 artwork I was a sculptor, thus I should sculpt. Really, collage is my forte, I consider myself a writer first, then sketcher, painter, scultptor. I express my creativity through all these mediums, including photography now, and I believe the very definition of art now has moved on to a place where it can no longer BE defined by any particular form or medium. If you think creatively, and express it, your an artist, no matter what your medium. My best friend(who barely gets pencil to paper for anything) once told me sex is art. I tend to agree.
I recently told Katyzzz that my definition of art can include pub carpets. Well, I guess it can. Some pattern designs are inspired and experimental, whether the effect was intended or not! Thats the exact point of todays artistic definition - the intent does not have to be there. In arts early days it was all about intent, intent to create realisim, or not, or colour, or experimentation - but now the intent doesnt have to exist for the art to be REAL.
Take my above sketch. I do not consider it to be art. This is a piece of my novel, my masterpiece, which Ive already been working on for about 9 years. This to me is an expression of a particular scene - trying to create the moods and conflicts of the characters within my own head - not art.
This sketch I DO consider art - Not only is it an expression from a scene of the novel, it is a direct attempt to make the character as correct and beautiful as possible, to show all her aspects in light of her character. Despite obviously being more of an abstract artist, I have here managed to create a very realistic effect, and the character herself, her strong will and fighting spirit, seem to leap from the page. This was intended as an artwork.
This is where my point on intent proves itself. If I were to take both these artworks and analyse them in my VAPD(as my art teachers would have me do) I wouldnt have a whole lot to say. Not much going on, no backgrounds, no definitions, perspective, etc. Perhaps good use of line?(giggle) Yet both, in the sense of being EXPERIMENTAL, and connected to the NOVEL(which is a form of art) become artworks in this light.
I always believed - even while carefully copying down the definition in my VAPD - that art is something that cannot be defined. It is an expression of the soul, a product of creativity. A doodle on the back of a book, a quick graffiti - its all art, all pieces of soul.

Perhaps you'll understand my perspective that a lot of formal courses are too narrow and restrictive and fail to let the spirit of creativity leap out and experience itself.
Well done,

I was always with you on that point!
Ash,
I wanted it out yesterday, but its a big work, bigger than i realized....it might take my whole life to work out this planet. Its a series of 6 books.....Started when I was 14...Folders and papers now weighing over a ton in relevant materials....1st book? On its third draft....
Wendi,
Thankyou muchly. Its ridiculous that in class they say "this is art" when you get out into the world you realize they'll call anything art, particularly if they have a marketing department!
There is a story behind the dress and boots. Its actually a major plot point, how did you know?

Inside my head, I ALWAYS look that hot! Inside reality? It's a tee shirt, comfy pants, and a head band. *LOL*

Cant wait to tell you the significance of dress and boots, too worried about copyright infringements to say it here! And thankyou, I was really hoping everyone found her as hot as she was portrayed!

I love your Art.
To me, art is something that creates a chemical [emotional?] response within me, good or bad. Repulsive or vulgar, sweet or angry, I don't care as long as it is an emotion ... a reaction of some sort ... a feeling ... a chemical change within ... becuase to me that is art.
What I hate is anything that is bland and causes nothing to happen .. the same old same old... that is not art in my mind [or body]...
Your drawings here?
...they are art ... [by my definition] they created lots of synaptic firings and chemical ignitions.
I would really love to see you take that teachers advice and try some sculpting... /truly. I can see you doing that... there is something in your hands?
I sense that they tingle every now and again?
Did you ever try sculpting?
/curious...

Yes darl, my hands tingle an awful lot, a lot of the time, especially the fingertips. I sculpted with great success for about 2 or 3 years in ceramics. I chose to do ceramics instead of photography but now I want to learn photography, old fashioned, REAL photography with chemicals and everything. Moving from ceramics into senoir art, I hated and felt restricted by the teachers pushing me to sculpt, so now all I want to do is sketch and paint - what they wouldnt let me do! I really wanted to sketch and paint under the teachers direction, because I had done sculpture to death in my mind, but was always sketching at home, so I wanted their advice on which ways to experiment. I feel my sketches would have improved years ago if I had been allowed to flower in that situation.
They won out however - my senior major work was a wearable sculpture - a black dragon named wyrm worn over the shoulders, attached to a snakeskin mini dress. The whole work was named 'embodyment' and I got 85% and a letter praising it telling me how unusual it was. I bet they had lots of fun trying him on!
