The horse flu affecting you (Let the snot run free)
September 14th 2007 12:09
Hello major conglomorate companies who have mystical little elves usually called employeees..... Theres something costing you a lot of money and you should know about it.
Theres no point adressing you by your common names.....Such as 'Coles' or 'Woolworths' or 'telstra'.....Because foxtel is telstra and woolworths is big W and coles is myer and well, you get my drift. Thats why I called them 'CONGLOMORATE' companies. Probably about 3 rule the world and pretend to be hundreds fighting each other. Point is - In Australia right now, you're losing billions.
The horse flu is affecting you. All I can do is tell my little story. Of course, you're not smart enough to see why MY story has anything to do with you, and you'll be frustrated that you've wasted so much time trying to find out why you're losing so much money and not being able to figure it out, but thats just a bonus for me.
For horse lovers, personal friends and other regulars who enjoy some twisted turns of phrase, by all means, read on.
On Tue night when I awoke from the coma the nice man in emergency had put me in, Magnus was off his feed. I didnt want it to mean anything. I prayed so hard.
Wed morn, he coughed. Then Shakir coughed, Zayfir coughed.....Teshan had green yellow snot running from her nose. Oh, hooray. I was taking two days off cos a nice guy in a white coat didnt know what was wrong with my head and had instructed me to 'rest up' while I wait to get in to another nice man who MIGHT be able to answer my questions.....So, Im thinking, the horse flu aint too restful.
We make an appiontment to the vet, rustle up a thermometer and begin the ardous task of taking 5 temperatures. All are elevated. To cut a very tiring story into a palatable form the vet came, confirmed, and found more bad news while he was at it.
Zayfir has injured his foreleg. Both I and the vet were concerned - Somehow infection is present with no entry point. Nasty stuff. Even nastier, I now have to administer 20ml of penicillin Am and Pm....IM injection.
Just so you know, getting a needle into a horses butt isnt worth the trouble. So, you use the neck. The neck, as well as having good muscles for injecting into, also has a great number of blood vessels and is jam packed with viens. Blood vessels also lead to viens. If a penicillin injection is mistakenly administered to a vein instead of a muscle.....What happens?
The thick, cold fluid rushes along the bloodstream to the brain - short trip from the neck. Within two minutes the horse is dead. You should have heard some of the stories Ive been told. Horrible stories, unbelievable stories. Stories of people who have done EVERYTHING right, including sucking back the needle to check for blood, and seeing none have finished the shot...Only to have had it in the vein anyway, somehow.
One to go. Tomorrows the last unless the vet decides to extend the course. So far we're both alive.
Our place is ringing with the sounds of painful coughing. I think the mare next door is going to die of pneumonia if they dont get a vet. The maltese army with the pony are seeing our vet and Ive lent them some rugs. Temps taken 3 times a day, extra warm rugs, electrolyte drinks, mucus breaking drugs.....My whole body is ringing with pins and needles and my eyes are burning.
Point? My horses are not a business to me, I dont make any money from them. They have the potential to make money and become a business one day, but not yet. At the moment I have to work aday job. I am unable to go to that day job. I have a legal responsability now Im quarantined, and a personal responsability to the health of my animals. Luckily Im government, so leave without pay is rampant, and schemes can be worked out so Im not out of pocket. Im the governments property now - they have to look after me.
Mum is also government property, and since she never takes any kind of leave, is now owed about 7 weeks.
But there are others......Many others, being left out by the new schemes and payment plans and whatever......
And just an indication? The anti mucus drugs alone cost $350 for about 4 days.....Of course, thats just for 5 horses. Some people have less, some people have more.
I can forgive this - all of this - if it improves our quarantine. If any other disease gets in, we may have to have a 'V' moment.....Because something is very wrong.
But, Im so tired, Im beginning to ramble. I think Id better fall into bed......Gotta get up early to wipe snot, administer drugs, and poke bums.

I did not enjoy reading this post, but must add it was a great rave, sweetie... I am so sorry.
Is horse flu serious to horses, like cat flu is to cats? Once a cat gets it, chances of recovery are very slim....
Prayers for you all...and certainly not the conglomerates.
Hugs

Its funny, because for years I read how dangerous it was, then cases started happening here, and the symptoms are severe and they cause secondary infections like pnuemonia. However, my horses have not had a temp over 39 degrees, they are coughing and noses runny but not nearly what has been described. I think my horses must be very fit and very tough to have gotten out of it so easily. Of course, it may yet have worse to come. They certainly dont feel well. So long as they do not get a secondary infection they should be fine.
Thanks for vistin, dear Lilla...
