First of all, the big news. The Magnetic Storm is Australian National Champion junior partbred gelding. This is his second win for the Auzzie Champs, he won back in 2005 as a yearling, and now he has taken out the 2/3 yr old category.
CONGRATULATIONS MAGNUS!!!!
Over Fri the 15th March till Sun 18th March we have been celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Australian National Championships. The first ever Auzzie Champs was held in 1982(the year I was born
) and to further honour the event the usual green and gold ribbons were silver this year. A trophy is also recieved for the champion of each class category, a magnificent metal worked sculpture of an arabians head, wearing the champion ribbon.
The top Arabian shows in Australia are -
- The Australian National Championships
- The East coast championships
- The State Titles
- The National Stud Horse Show.
These shows are considered 'a' grade shows, where you recieve the most points for wins or placings, on the 'arab' calandar. Agricultural shows, (eg, Hawkesbury show, Camden show, the royal easter show) all have classes for arabs but are not considered important for point scoring, unless you need to qualify for a bigger show, then all points matter! Another way to promote your horse is also to show in Agricultural AND Arab rings, gaining a greater covereage, such as the famous arabian mare, Mayfly.
The Australian National Championships is the only show which uses the 'three judge system' and I want it at EVERY show, even the agricultural shows for the arabian classes. At 2006 State Titles, Magnus came second after a beautiful horse named Swan Ridge Royal Occasion, despite beating him previously at East Coast, Auzzies, and Stud Horse. At the 2007 East Coast, Magnus was in the Top 5 and recieved a ribbon, but I find these to be inconsistant results measured against the fact that he is now our Australian National Champion for the second time.
In a one judge system there is no deliberating, no point scoring, in my opinion, not a lot of fairness. A judge can be anybody in Australia who has a social profile, if your lucky, you may get an American or German judge, but no points are given. They simply make their decision on the day, at that moment, based on how they feel and their own personal feelings on what characteristics are 'better' in their eyes.
At the Auzzies, three judges deliberate, and give out points to each horse. The sheets are sent up to the announcer by a steward and not even the judges know who is the champion until the points have been tallied. In 2005 as a yealing, Magnus recieved 27 points out of a possible 30, an almost perfect score. The Reserve Champion of that year recieved a score of 15, so in laymans terms, Magnus blew him out of the water!
This year, of three different judges, Magnus recieved a score of 27 for the second time, and the Reserve Champion, his closest competition, could not touch him with a score of 18. Thats incredibly consistant, and hopefully through this evidence you will see why I prefer the three judge system. If he has consistantly scored the same points, putting him so far above the competition(which are almost always the same horses) then how was it possible for a judge to place him second at the State Titles? How was it possible to be in Top 5 at East Coast, when if the points remain true then he should have been East Coast champion as well?
Im not complaining - dont get me wrong! There is no one at my age in THE WHOLE OF AUSTRALIA who has bred and shown a horse to this capacity, and I take great pride in that fact - that I am the youngest SUCCESSFUL breeder in Australia to date. I am merely making a point on the inconsistancies within the breed shows, and if they want to encourage more entries and less protests, I strongly encourage introducing the three judge system in all shows, not just for our peace of mind, but for the fairness of the show and the history records of The Arabian Horse Society. There is too much talk of these shows being 'bought' by certain people (who shall remain nameless for now!) a judge mysteriously acquiring a horse from a certain stud, then that stud collecting all the championships for that judges classes - or sponsors who pour money into events and walk away from those events with ribbons they themselves have paid for.
I truly believe that all of these shows have equal parts fairness and corruption - just like any sport. I know Im far too poor to have bribed anyone, so Magnus has won his placings fairly, but what of the other rings? I honestly believe the three judge system would be a fantastic way to even up the odds for every show and abolish a lot of the bitching - even if horse shows and bitching will always go hand in hand.
And, in the meantime, Im making an effort to turn Spirit into a show jumper(I clear it or knock it down - no arguments there) Shakir into a Dressage horse(I perform the movements or I do not - no corruption there) and Zayfir into an endurance horse(cross the line first or last - cant get any fairer!) so that I am not confined or restricted to one particular type of showing.
Because I believe that is the greatest evil of all - constrictions to one type of industry. The breed shows ARE fun, glamouros, exciting, full of prestige, and I adore them, I just hope that over years to come we can change a few small aspects to make it fairer for all involved. Encourage more entries, have even more fun!
How am I going to get sponsership from Horseland if I only win at ONE type of show?

Had strange feelings reading this... kept drifting into the future, seeing you as a major player in the way the events are conducted. Future judge, perhaps?
Looking forward to the pics!

Magnus, yep, that's me! Bravo for me, my beautiful horse, I sure backed a winner there.
We're both preening, together we belong.

I have to apologize. I've been writing Mangus, not Magnus. Names are important... I'll get it right from now on. *smiles*
